The master plan involved placing cameras inside the cars that qualified first and second for Sunday’s vintage race for IMSA GTP, GTO, GTU, and SCCA Trans-Am cars, and cutting between the footage to show the dynamic competition at play.
Those plans lasted all of five corners as Mazda Team Joest IMSA DPi driver Tristan Nunez took the lead in his 1992 Mazda RX-792P from polesitter and fellow pro Ken Dobson in a 1985 March-Buick GTP. Nunez then got loose, watched as Dobson regained the lead, and went on the fight the oversteer that challenged his four-rotor Mazda.
The end result was two in-car videos where Dobson and Nunez were connected for less than half a lap, but with the supreme turbo boost and speed generated by the big turbocharged V6 Buick, and Nunez catching slides in his wailing RX-792P, the pair gave us some fun individual footage to enjoy.
