This video takes a look at a number of ways Rachel Oates lies to her audience about the events of 2019, as well as provide evidence of two incredibly transphobic incidents carried out by her (in which we weren't the targets). Because the truth will out. The legal video could take a while to put together, and so long as Oates doesn’t put out any new lies, that will likely be our final piece until we’re ready to archive everything, including new evidence that Oates has tried to scrub from the internet. I doubt Oates will try to have this one taken down for defamation, especially since she's now admitted that she has no intention of following through. She might be able to feign ignorance that she began a legal process the first time, but that's a little hard to do at this point and will make our case regarding her deliberate abuse of KZitem's legal claims system stronger.

Just so we're clear (since I know somebody is going to bring this up), blocking Oates to avoid her transphobia is not the same as Oates demanding to be left alone after she weaponised self harm to silence her trans critics. The first act is marginalised people using the systems they were provided to protect themselves, the second act is a violent bigot resorting to further violence to avoid accountability. When Rachel Oates did what she did, everything changed. She needs to be held to account. Because we spent months putting barriers between us and her, as society tells us we should do as marginalised folk, only for her to flip the table on us anyway. You don’t get to drag us, kicking and screaming, into your transphobic shitshow, only to tap out when we’re finally working towards justice. Rachel Oates picked this fight, she’ll damn well live with the consequences.

@@EssenceOfThought heyo! just wanted to say thanks for your channel, as as an exvangelical, chronically cis, lesbian it's helped me confront a lot of the more not good attitudes from the things that helped me deconvert i found you through searching for telltale atheist's music, funnily enough, as at that point i felt quite a few of his things were kinda toxic (and oof the r slur hit hard as a disabled and neurodiverse person), and u were the thing that kinda broke the camel's back towards him i eventually unfollowed other ppl (i.e. Genetically Modified Skeptic) for various reasons, including islamophobia, general conflation of religion and evangelical christianity, and just cultural christianity in general but i was still following rachel oats for her videos on english stuff and also bc she did that series on gay girl, good god that helped me deconstruct a few lingering internalized homophobic ideas that i had learned, until literally the other day when a notif from you talking about her popped up TL;DR channel cool, helped with recongizing some of the problems in the community that helped me get out of the cult i was in (beyond just general cultural christianity, racism, ableism, theophobia, etc.) hope u don't turn out to be islamophobic or smthing as i inevitably sort through ur backlog lmao

I'm glad this was randomly recommended to me. I'm trans, and I used to watch her. Last I heard from her was when the whole Gabbie Hannah thing was happening. I feel like that whole incident made the majority of people who heard of it very, VERY supportive of her. She seems to think she can get away with everything now. It's so ironic how the way she weaponises mental health is so, so similar to Gabbie Hannah by now.

When I watch KZitem videos, I keep hearing remarks in passing about how the creator supports LGBT and especially trans rights. But when a crisis arises they, too often, choose solitarity in their group with those who abuse LGBT folk rather than stick to their profession of support. I chalk this up to hypocrisy and cowardice.

Having me Listening and getting infomation has me now looking at her other actions over the course of the videos a bit more critcally. I'm an artist and art historian she did one video on an A woman Photogapher I remember learning in one of my Art History classes where I had a feminest Art Historian teacher. As well as the back and fourth with the whole Gabby Hanna situation. The way Oats talked about the photogapher was vastly different in this "Well it turns out that she actually wasn't even thinking in the way that feminest protray her work even".... without showing the actual source she was talking about. I remember feeling odd about that and wanted to talk even more so with a friend who have been intrested talking to me about my experience with Art History and I'm starting to wonder if she wanted to "rewrite how we talk about Femineism"? That's a huge leap of course, and I'm all for grays in a conversation. But I also noticed she rarely talks about art history other than that one time because there's others during that time that was HEAVILY Femineist, like this one woman who worked on taking photogarphy of self potraites in the nude but among nature and being part of nature and there's a point where there's speculaulation of her HUSBAND may have murdered her because she was becoming more famous than him and hid her body (as I believe her whole body was never body? I have to double check my sorces), and since she keeps talking about Violence against women... Uh, that whole thing is a perfect example of that and actually bringing a bigger conversation about violence to strong willed woman at that. But why bring up the one that talks about the male gaze in "fake movie stills" and vaugely talk about that the gray aspect of Femisneism? Why do I bring up this? Because I also realized there's this weird "Puritan" aspect to her Femisim as that wave of Feminsism is hugely sexual freedom in nature and she focused on the one artist who focused on the suggestion and not the bigger conversation of the freedom. I'm asexual myself (and coming to terms I may be Agender-Fem fluid), but I always found it fasinating about the sexual freedom the Feministim strived for for bodily atomanity. I personally don't get arroused at seeing people's bodies, but I'll happily draw a nude body to learn what makes a body a body. I'll happily look at a nude of a painting or a photo to read what an artist is trying to say about said body. A lot of the Femineists actually within that wave of Feminism *talk* about feeling dysphoria about their bodies and wanted to be free from those feelings of feeling ashamed of their bodies as I remember some Trans friends actually feel connected to the conversations they were having. I also had a double take that Oats kept calling you "He" in her video clips and I had to double check of your pronouns on the youtube video to make sure I wasn't hearing wrong. and I wasn't and it made me feel very icky. (I'm sorry for the long comment on an 8 month video. Just a conversation I wanted to bring up and in a way want to talk about the issues that don't feel like they connect properly with what she peaches and what she then does?)

Thank you for your kinds words, they mean a lot. Some people might still be confused by what's the difference between us blocking Oates in 2019 and her demanding to be left alone now, but the fact is, had Oates just left everyone alone when we'd blocked her, we wouldn't be here today. We're only here because of the extreme violence she resorted to whilst targeting us and other trans people. Once she did that, everything changed, and she needs to be held to account for her actions.

Hi, glad you asked. I didn't cover it in this video as it was pretty central to the topic when covered in the video that recently started all of this, the one about Lily Cade and Rose of Dawn: kzitem.info/news/bejne/w5mAso2jhnOJoqg (It's timestamped.) As for Oates' accusation, that relates to my video responding to Holy Koolaid after he tried to pass of transphobic abuse by a patron (Jonathan Friedel) of his as some sort of secret job interview. After talking about how abuse was not part of my job description and I did not consent to being abused, I move from my personal gripes to my fears regarding the rest of the trans community. I stated, repeatedly, that I am not at risk of self harm due to my privilege ensuring that, at the time, I had a therapist and general support structure. Yet, I noted, neither Koolaid nor Friedel knew any of this, they just knew I belonged to an at-risk demographic. I told them that they were bloody lucky that they chose me rather than another trans person, since, if they continued to treat trans people in general the way they treated me, they would eventually kill someone: kzitem.info/news/bejne/romlmYOlcGJnq5g (It's timestamped.) This came up in the aforementioned Lily Cade and Rose of Dawn video since, aside from Rose of Dawn helping RO weaponise self harm, Lily Cade and Rose of Dawn, just like Rachel Oates, accuse trans people of 'weaponising self harm' any time we talk about the cost of transphobia on the trans community in general, i.e. the way it leads to high rates of suicide, with Cade, Dawn, and Oates labelling it an 'abusers narrative'. This is, of course, garbage. There's a difference between weaponising self harm/suicide 1:1 to silence criticism and acknowledging the impact of transphobia on an entire community. That's what the Cade/Dawn video covered. Hope this helps

@@EssenceOfThought Hey, thanks for the thoughtful reply here! I tried very hard to give Rachael Oats the benefit of the doubt here. I liked some of her content, didn't always agree with her conclusions but wasn't too alarmed. I even watched part of her video, but it made me feel literally sick because it was so obvious how she was lying to cover herself. Then seeing folks, including other trans people, in the comments defending her about how she couldn't possibly be transphobic. I'm feeling pretty shocked to be honest. She's very good at branding herself. Following her run in with me, she ran to Dawn. Then, when that all fell apart, she began pretending like she was super supportive of trans people, as can be seen in the following: “These kinds of people who think it's worse to be called transphobic than it is to do anything transphobic. Or that it's worse to be called a misogynist than it is to say misogynistic things. It's ridiculous. It's not. Just be a good person, and you won't be called these things." kzitem.info/news/bejne/mYOHsICEsqdlhmU Yet, only three minutes before this she stated: "No, the only thing a man can provide that a woman can't is a penis. Only thing!" kzitem.info/news/bejne/tmdqyWmgfX-YY6w And in spite of members of her audience calling this out for being trans exclusionary, she never circled back to correct herself as people might then realise that said slip was a window into how she actually saw trans people. Same reason she almost entirely used male pronouns to refer to me and never used female pronouns, only rarely using they singular. Because that's how she saw me. She even recently lied about male pronouns having been towards the start of my pronoun list in 2019, confirming that she knew said order often demonstrates preference, when I have evidence that confirms male pronouns were included at the end as I was keeping them around for the convenience of others. I'm just glad you were able to get away.

I’m sorry I didn’t look into the situation further and see how she was hurting you and others. I always felt bad about how Gabby Hanna went after her, and her talking about how she suffered abuse. I guess that blinded me. So far in the video, it seems that most of these claims are from Twitter or live streams, both of which I don’t use to follow KZitemrs. Just another case of a KZitemr showing bad behavior, and me not finding out until I randomly come across a video about it (I was seeing if James Marriott’s video about the Rachel/Gabby situation was still up since he was making Rachel out to be the bad guy).

I only just found your channel and had no idea about her problematic views on trans people or this entire situation. To be fair it's been over a year since I last regularly watched her content. Needless to say as someone with many trans friends and a person who has recently been struggling with my own gender identity I have unsubscribed from her channel.

the more you cover this (are forced to cover this by her ongoing lies and attempts to rewrite the truth of what actually happened), the more stunned i am, but also so incredibly thankful at the same time. i just started watching your videos in 2019, and was subscribed to her, and jimmy snow, as well as member of the aca discord when The Shitshow happened. i left the discord after they retracted their apology to the trans community, but stayed subbed to her and jimmy. and then your videos were in my recommended, and i decided that i wanted more input and watched them. it's one of the best things that ever happened to me, in regards to opening my critical thinking. i immensely respect the detailed work you do, as well as your patience. if i were you, i would have lost my shit into yelling expletives at her a long time ago. reactive bully is a new term to me, but it so perfectly fits her and her actions. thank you, for the work you do, sometimes at great cost to yourself. i hope you can take time to at least attempt to relax, and look after yourself. Oh thank you for this. I wasn't aware of this side of her but I've felt a little weird watching her content since i found out I was trans as she talks primarily about women's issues and never seems to include trans people in her assesssments. The things you've shown her saying are really terrible, and I'm glad this video is out there, as I don't follow KZitemrs Twitter and probably never would have known about this otherwise

Welp this is what I get for only really listening to her book reviews and Girl Defined series and ignoring the drama videos. I didn't know what half of this was, particularly because I don't have twitter and Rachel presents herself as an ally to trans and queer people through her Girl Defined videos in particular. There's always two versions of one story and I'm glad this channel came up on my feed so I can understand this as a whole.

It's sad but now when I see cis women talk about gender rights... I'm going to have to check them and determine their trans views. ... I officially can no longer assume pro-women content is pro trans.

I think someone who makes a lot of "pro-women" content should immediately set off red flags; very terf-y phrase, since it's likely not inclusive of trans women If the content largely consists of reproductive rights/people's right to choose to have an abortion is purely framed as "women's rights" that's likely a person who isn't a trans ally, even if they state so... And as someone who has watched Rachel Oates content until recently; not being willing to leave out the words "men and women" in conversations about sex/reproductive organs... etc. is also a red flag and something that... felt wrong... before finding out how anti-trans she truly is Hope it doesn't sound like I'm talking down to you; just some observations that helps with judging if someone is either not as trans friendly as they say or (at best) simply very uninformed

The past 6 months had already worn me out, I remember my doctor getting worried since I had a triple infection due to how compromised the constant stress had made my immune system. I stopped following RR a few years ago when he mentioned he voted for Brexit, and I fell out of the atheist side of YT because something always seemed off. I agreed with some things, but there was a lot that rubbed me the wrong way like the ableism ("people who believe are cr*zy") and stuff like that. There was always a weird vibe with that group I could never quite put my finger on. Like if you can't even gender the person you're attacking correctly you can't remotely claim to be a trans ally.

The big problem with Oates having shown herself to be quite manipulative is that it calls a lot of the stuff she has talked about in question. Was she actually in an abusive relationship? Who was the person aggressing in the situation between her and Gabbie Hannah (And yes, I know Gabbie is a very controversial figure)? I used to really like her content and I only learned through her content that skin picking disorder - which I suffer from - is a thing, and her continued affirmation that being a childfree cis-woman by choice doesn't make a woman broken has helped me feel more confident in my choice. But I am also a queer woman that is firm in her belief that trans-rights are human rights and I will not stand behind an individual, who purposefully misgenders a trans woman who disagrees with her. I just subscribed to your channel yesterday, Ethel, but I just want to say that I appreciate the calm way you carry yourself through infuriating topics and the heaps of references that you post so that your viewers can fact check you.

I only found out about this situation recently and I'm disgusted with Oates and all the people in the secular community on KZitem who've defended her or didn't call her in on her transphobia publicly. A few years ago I watched these people and they helped me out of Mormonism, and as a trans person I can't put into words how angry and hurt I am to see what they've done. I do have one question, if you don't mind answering. Have Sam and Tanner from Zelph on the Shelf made any comments/statements about these situations? I've enjoyed their content for a while and have even financially supported them, but learning all this I'm skeptical of them.

Only 7min into the video and I'm already pissed. The constant use of he/him instead of she/her for Essence already makes my blood boil. Even if Rachel didn't know Essence's pronouns (and this is me playing devil's advocate), then you use they/them. Like, it's not hard to be respectful. Even if you don't like them, call them by their preferred pronouns, otherwise you're just showing yourself to be a rude person, which people can/will use against you.

I did allow them at this point, yet it has been noted by others how she almost always exclusively used he/him, especially when she's presenting me as dangerous (see her Twitter thread weaponising self harm as an example). She also left up comments misgendering me on the thread I'm responding to here, even though I could see her replying to comments around them, so she had seen them, she just felt misgendering me was acceptable until I called her out for it on Twitter and she realised how bad that looked. twitter.com/EssenceOfTweet/status/1511172791403692034

Hey I just found this video because I wanted to unravel my thoughts and rethink my choices about supporting her. Forgive me if this may be long. I was an avid subscriber that liked her content, especially when she talked about poetry and books. I unsubscribed from her channel maybe half a year ago bc I felt that her contents no longer resonated with me and I began to feel unsettled about her, I can’t put it into words but something about her delivery and critique felt bitter and didn’t come out of a place of genuine wish for the creator she covered to be better, it felt personal and punching down. Though I am no longer subscribed to her, I still went back and watch some of her past works from time to time. I recently went back to check a few of her videos, notably the one about Brooklyn Beckham’s printed works. I decided to watch it because recently I developed an interest in photography and wanted to learn from her critique about his works since I rmb that video had quite a few good informations. What I found instead was… a grown adult, punching down on a teenager who happened to be born into wealth. I agreed with her critique on his skills, but she had to throw in a couple anecdotes about how she had to work for everything that she wanted back in her youth because she grew up in poverty. I sympathized with her, but that changed the tone of the entire video. It’s no longer about Brooklyn who took terrible pictures and her critique of his works. It’s now an open letter of bitterness about his privilege and blatant condescension about his work and everything he stands for. This, as I came to realize, is a common theme among her videos and her takes. As I stated, I went back to rewatch some of her past works. They are everywhere, most of her critiques came from a place of moral high ground she seemed to believe she stood on. So far, she escaped criticism by virtue of being the “good feminist” and an ally to minorities. But her recent insensitive posts really puts the nail in the coffin about my trust in her integrity. Every time any form of critique is thrown her way, she took cover by stating “i’m hurt! I’m ill” so on so forth until it lost all meaning. So, thank you for speaking up. I’m sorry your community had to go through this and how her slight went completely under the radar.
