This writer knows nothing of history if all he can talk about is style. Neil Shicoff knows the pain of anti-Semitism, which is why his interpretation of Eleazar is so heart-rending. I immediately compared Domingo, Caruso and Carreras in the same aria. None could touch Neil for this aria, which, I am sure came from the depths of his being.

In my experience, he's a singer you have to hear live. His voice doesn't record especially well, but in person, it's an amazingly rich, powerful, expressive, overtone-rich sound. He's blown me away every time I've seen him.

This performance was recommended to me last week. What a voice he has and the sheer heartbreak of his realization of his role in Rachel's death sentence. I thought Caruso's version was the best. But Shicoff's is extraordinary.

I agree with Azangero Joe below. Singing it this much slower than the norm is very risky. It would have flopped if not for one thing: Thanks both to Shicoff's superb acting and the manner in which immerses himself totally in the music and words, he makes you forget that you are listening to an aria. Instead, it is as if you are watching a real person singing his heart out in a gut-wrenching way, and you become entranced by it. I have rarely seen Shicoff live, and I was never a great fan of his voice or singing. But in this performance, he is truly remarkable, and the voice is sufficiently satisfactory, even if it is obviously not of Caruso or Tucker quality.

So dangerous to be doing this at this ridiculously slow tempo but due to his dramatic intensity, Shicoff pulls it off. His voice is similar to Carreras' but Carreras can not touch him in this aria. Shicoff had a nice career in his prime but he should have been a bigger star than he was. Don't know why that never happened.

Yes, Mr Shicoff is a immense artist, and his "performance" both as an actor and singer is astounding in intself, but what we hear here is a brilliant demonstration of everything to avoid when singing french opera : the french speaking is a disaster, impossible to understand, and the style chaotic, good for verist italian opera ! One should not forget that the style is the key in lyrical singing, and here, beyond the "exploit", this aria sung like that is impossible...

Sometimes it is necessary to do things that could be seen as technical or solfegical defects in favor of interpretation. and those defects make the interpretation more refined and proper to a genius. This interpretation is the best that i ever heard! And believe me, i’ve listened to every ricording for the most famous singer. But this version is the best for me. I’m not a expert.

Style??? What are you babbling about? This is not a Faure chanson. This is an aria, yes, verismo. Eleazar is bursting with grief and self-blame. You want it to be tripping off his tongue. The audience must feel his pain; unending pain and grief. I wish I could meet Mr. Shicoff. To feel his agony. There is no comfort I could offer. His voice and acting penetrated my soul. My tears ran down my cheeks as Eleazar's cry to Rachel and Hashem. A thousand bravos are not nearly enough for this singular performance.
