One of the most diaappointing things to me is that this lady has never gotten a chance in the states to be one of our true musical darlings. Rachelle is one of the best voices ever to grace the music industry. She has one of those timeless voices. She does very well in cities that promote real jazz music like Atlanta. I agree with you that the industry didn't know how to market her unique talent. She was touted as the Ella Fitzgerald of our time.

It's called Jazz. Always up for interpretation - I, for one, think her extra lengthy notes and G Duke's re-imaginings are sublime - they carry me away. As a singer, I would have made some different choices, but we all have different abilities and so, different ways of expressing ourselves and feeling where a song can take us. We must obey.

I'm so glad so many of you know Rachelle. Living in a small country (population-wise), it's disconcerting to know that people simply aren't aware of all the artists of this calibre out there! Glad to have company. But I have to disagree with some of you: she's a singer (sound) in her own right & cannot be compared to the diehards of the early days.

I agree, it is futile to compare singers of different vocally stylistic backgrounds. Rachelle comes from the Sarah Vaughan school of stretching and milking a song for every ounce of beauty it can produce. Patti and Aretha are vocal belters more adept at milking all the emotion a song may contain and conveying it in a performance. All are excellent at what they do. Appreciate.

She does make faces - doesn't she? However,Rachelle is a true artist. She does what it takes emotionally, facially(if you will) and vocally to deliver. And deliver she does. Back in the day we would say that she gets "ugly" with it to describe her type of great performance. I wish more artist of today would get "ugly" with it but the truth is - they can't. Well, they could but it would not make a difference. That's the sad part.

The problem with her voice and her, overall to me is simple. She's 10 TIMES BETTER LIVE. Sorry, but her CDs, and her studio recordings just do NOT CAPTURE the subtle textures, and controlled improvisation of her amazing musical gift. Her voice is a TREASURE that can MOSTLY be appreciated LIVE!!!!

Leandro, I know how difficult it must be to find a comparison with Ms Farrell but that is the way it is. Here Piano's are really only one piano, played by George Duke. And when you sing a song from your heart and not from a sheet of paper, you will have a tendency to make faces.

I wonder what people mean when they use the term 'underrated' to describe someone like Rachelle Ferrell! I think that is a slur. Just because someone is 'pop'ular doesn't mean they are any good. Those who are in the know, will appreciate this artist, those who aren't on this musical level yet are just missing out. They haven't gotten out of primary school yet and 'pop' is all they can handle. Has nothing to do with 'rating' Rachelle, just has everything to do with people's musical level.
