Someone below complained about too much vibrato.... That is the personal style of this player for this performance. That is simply the beauty of performance. Each player interprets each piece in their own way, adding something special to the same. How absolutely boring it would be if there was one perfect way to play everything, and no one variated from that. I would not want to be a part of that universe of perfect playing. Thank God for variations and quirks. To hell with perfection, which thankfully does not exist anyway in the real world, and is merely an abstraction, anymore than a "perfect composition" would be. In this world, there simply IS no perfect....

I find it funny how many of you write these long think pieces claiming to be embracing performers' individual styles but really just not able to accept people's personal tastes. How does what you said have anything to do with someone PERSONALLY thinking this is too much vibrato for their taste?

I'm not a fan of the big "wall of vibrato" myself. But if you opt to listen to Russian music played by a Russian string player, you can't really expect anything else. Shafran is my favorite Russian cellist. His vibrato is narrow and concentrated which keeps the music from becoming tawdry and maudlin. He varies the vibrato according to the phrasing (phrasing that is incomparably elegant). And he keeps a thin veil over the emotions of the music which actually makes it more all the more effective.

@@jimp4170 JIm, well said, and thanks for bringing up this 6 year old post. Thats what I love about you tube...no where else can comments be revived from so long ago, and its nice to see old posts as well, which I long forgot about The same could be said for rock, jazz or any musical style.....there really is no perfect, and even the finest exemplars, ala Eric Clapton, have their own little ideosyncracies and quirks, which adds more to their superb playing than most realize In fact, if you play an instrument, Jim, monkey around a bit with off tuning your instrument if you can, or playing it a little off, in any way you can imagine.....perfection is a great thing to aspire to, but the quirkiness of off playing, of which vibrato is a small part, is unsung

I can't help but feel like the "too much vibrato" person is jealous that he is able to vibrate the way he was able to. Most people can't achieve the degree of relaxation in their fingers and hands to quite do that. I know I'm envious...but I'm here to listen to it in awe and feel joy and wonder from it.

He has truly the most recognizable sound and although some of his interpretations are not my favorite, he is always unshakingly true to his style and for that reason he is def my favorite cellist! And ahh i would give anything for his vibrato and sense of pace
