These shows about Gabby Petito and "white woman missing syndrome" are actually funny (in a sardonic way). If it were a black woman who had gone missing while travelling with a black man, then it would highly likely be deemed racist reporting. The media would be accused of insinuating that blacks are criminals, unsafe to travel with! C'mon man! You can't have it both ways (though you'll keep trying).

Over 500K people go missing a year which is roughly 1500 a day. Were we to give them all equal coverage that would be like a 2 second blurb each. Point is, the coverage of Gabby is extraordinarily uncommon & 99.9% of those reported missing we will never hear of, White, Black, Brown or Purple.

@Joey Harper hi, i think your understanding of statistics is faulty. yes, there is a larger number of caucasians compared to other races, and yes, a bigger number of white people go missing than other races. However, that doesn't automatically mean that "white people go missing at a larger scale". In order to understand you not only look up the percentages of people that go missing per year by race, but you also have to know how much of the general population that race makes up. For example, black people make up 13% of the entire US population (white = 72%). But 40% of black people went missing (white = 59%). Compared to white people, black people go missing at a higher rate, about 2 times as much (0.37/0.13 = 2.8 vs. 0.59/0.72 = 0.8). Might want to rethink the stupidity comment you made here.

Why isn’t there a news story on every station for just as many Palestinian-heritage politicians as there are for those of Asian-heritage? Do you see how this is a silly way of looking at things. There’s no way to win this game. Life is never gonna be perfect. There’s always gonna be disparities of some sort. That once every three years there’s some big missing persons story and it happens to be a white girl most of the time….who cares? We should care that these things aren’t in the news MORE often regardless of race. Or that things like child trafficking happening on a daily basis aren’t in the news. The color of the girl is so irrelevant.

Almost hate to bring this up, but it seems (to me) that there's a lack of prioritization for black and brown lives when the perpetrator is not known to be white. The deeper meaning from my perspective is that we as a society haven't figured out how to function without racism. Many also seem to exploit our emotions over racial divisions for a much more sinister objective. My philosophy is that it's more productive for us to listen more and talk less, but above all remember that KINDNESS ALWAYS WINS!

Let's just admit that any discussions on inequities makes some people very uncomfortable. And some people would rather we NOT talk about it, pretend that it doesn't exist and go on about their merry way. Just as long as you are comfortable. @@TT-di4qz "This is about the lived experience of all lives" - is very true. May I also add that it's the thoughts about our lived experience that's shapes our perceptual interpretation of what our reality becomes. Perception does not evolve out of reality, it formulates what we believe reality to be. It's only through a collection of perceptual realities that we get closer to actuality. Have to be honest, not a fan of the equality of outcome. Seems like that would ensure that those who have ambition to maintain a certain standard of life would support those who expect others to provide theirs for them. When people struggle to be self-sufficient by getting something for free, it seems to make people feel worse about themselves by comparison standards and reinforce pathological insecurities, shame, and envy which is not for the mental health of society. These discussions seem to struggle when one or more people use them as a way of looking for reasons to be offended by one or both individuals who are now engaged in a debate over which life experience is closer to the truth and which one has more blind spots. It's much easier to have these conversations with people who are not so married to their own perceptions, those who are excited about exploring these perceptual limitations rather than feel threated by them, those who take responsibility for their own contribution to the life they wish to experience, and those not engaged in cycles of trying to convince others to hold themselves responsible for the lives that other people could have had (as in if I were to blame other people for how I feel about the way I experience my own life).

He cares deeply about every case he's assigned, whether it's a wealthy white woman or a destitute black woman who he knew would get no media coverage and no one would be pressuring him to solve the crime. He couldn't eat on Thanksgiving because he was so stressed out over that case. I'm sure there are other detectives just like him, but probably not very many unfortunately. Again The fact that people started this debate before her body was even found and continued to excellerate this debate before shes even laid to rest is SHAMEFULL!! This debate could have waited to respectfully give her family the time to grieve and burry their daughter before the medias race debates begin! Im from Canada and my daughter is aboriginal so the issue of missing Native American woman and girls is very real. The other problem across ALL races including WHITE people is their socioeconomic status in society. Police tend to right off woman who are poor, drug addicted or street workers as well as the media. Unfortunately with many of these cases including cases of people over the age of 18 police arent interested because its not a crime for an adult to want to leave. Gabbys case is a 1 in a million case as its the circumstances surrounding her disappearance not the colour of her skin that has caught the worlds attention. Lets remember that by all appearences they were a happy loving couple on a trip of a lifetime and suddenly Brian returns home with their van and Gabby is not with him. He doesnt report her missing or inform her family of her dissapearence. Once her family reports her missing he refuses to talk to them or police and gets a lawyer for him and his family so they dont have to speak to police. THIS circumstance is what got THIS LEVEL of attention NOT the COLOUR of their skin. A young poplar black couple on social media with the same dynamic to their case woulkd have outraged and grabbed the publics attention just as much. I sadly can only think of 2 missing persons cases I can remember and one was a young Native American child taken from her home in my city which is still talked about today and John Benet Ramsy. Missing person cases generally dont receive this type of world wide attention unless its got certain ellements that grab the public's attention....its sad but true! Also the fact that this reporter asks when are they going to PRIORATIZE woman of colour over white women is very despairing!!! No race should be a priority over another when they are missing!! Each case needs to be taken seriously and every human life no matter their race is valuable!! There are still very real issues with equality in society but we will never be truely equal when we place priority to one race over another!!!

I don't agree with this. When we talk "missing people of color", not all, but a large percent of these "missing" women come from communities where there is severe economic hardship, abuse, neglect, addiction. No one is plotting to make their move to the reservations, ghettos and projects to raise their families right? Yes, these are different tragic situations, but a lot of girls go "missing" because they simply don't want to be found, went off with bad individuals or had issues themselves. This is apples and oranges in other words. I am a white male and let me tell you this Gabby business affected me, simply for the fact this girl in fact did have her entire life in front of her, she could have been a van-lifer and been very popular with or without a bf, it's like when all the stars align this girl had it all and the person she loved the most, someone she saw her children's eyes in and a future with took it from her. Think back to the Chris Watts tale and what he did to his entire family.....think back to the guy in Vegas that shot up all those people in Vegas with no motive. When white people "snap" it's just plain tragedy and this girl, it just makes no sense what happened to her. A missing reservation girl?? Are you kidding me? I have nothing but sympathy for women of color but it's also a "white thang" to assume that a missing native american girl has anything back on the res worth heading back to. I going to reiterate this point again, a lot of girls go "missing" because they simply don't want to be found, and if you knew how they lived, grew up, you wouldn't blame them
