As a Brazilian who lives in São Paulo, I can say that its population is based in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, African, South America Natives, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, English, French, German, Russian, Jewish, Lebanese and maybe more people. I am a descandant from a pure Japanese father (which is actually a descendant from Okinawa, an island which stays in the territory of Japan but had a lot of influence from China, Korea, Japan, probabily Indonesia and etc) and a mother whose descendence comes from Africa, South America Natives, Portuguese and probably Jewish Spanish people.

Actually german immigration began in the beginning of XIX century, way before the great wars. Here in my state it began in 1829 and the first Empress of Brazil was from Austria.

In Brazil usually does not classify as African American. But only by color -> "Black" "Brown" "Yellow" "White" And is not as important as in the US, but racism also exists here. Just look at the color of the skin in the best universities, and compare with the color of those that underpin the social pyramid. The German and Italian immigration began before the Second World War. Brazil was the last independent country to abolish slavery. And tried to whitewash the country bringing labor from Europe, many Germans and Italians migrated to south of Brazil. But these countries have banned the immigration due to working conditions (practiced slavery for debt) So the Brazilian government replaced the European workforce by Japanese We have the largest Japanese community outside Japan.

I Understand, that their ancestors both came to the Americas etc. But When the World hears American, they think person from the United States. People from Guatemala or Mexico don't really fit in as"American" in the global eyes. The United States not just speaks another language but is in another Continent from Brazil as you would know but just saying it would be nice to refer to Afro Brazilians for who they are, which is Afro Brazilians they have different cultures from Afro- Colombians, Afro-Venezuelans, Afro-Costa Ricans (Ticos) (--- (Central Americans btw ) who make up parts of their continent leading from South America all the way up to North America where there is Afro Canadians.

Brazilians do see race trust me. They may not talk about it as much as Americans do however Brazilians do see race. There is a lot racism in Brazil. If you watch Brazilian TV, some TV shows mock Afro-Brazilians even go as far as putting blackface. FYI, Afro-Brazilians are not African Americans, they're Afro-Brazilians.

That said, there IS segregation otherwise. However, I would say it is mostly related to social class than race. The thing is, most of the black people are poor, but far from there NOT being poor white people, which I would say are also kept poor on purpose. Because of ineffective investments in education which would make poor people able to ascend socially, for instance, and in infrastructure, there being the possibilities of ascension, there is a group of people safely having it way too easy. Apparently this has been changing, I have my doubts though. (I'm starting to wander to a different subject...)

Brazilians see race, and know which Brazilians are purebred and who are mestizo. I'm Brazilian, I'm completely descended from Europeans, and I and those like me are proud of that.
