I had a 6 cylinder turbocharged '79 Ford Lehman in a 25' Luhrs. It used 14 quarts of oil and the injector pump was lubricated by the fuel oil. Wish I had thought to pierce the filter when doing an oil change. I used a little rubber impeller 12 volt pump to suck out the old oil. I still use the pump to change the oil in the lawnmower.

That only works if your oil filter is mounted vertically as shown. Don't try it if your filter hangs upside down or is horizontal else you will have a mess. :-)
@thomaspaccione8237

Only issue is that if by some chance you cant get the filter off, you are dead in the water, because you now have a hole on your filter. I must admit that I am tempted to try it.
@eosjoe565
7 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. Although probably only an issue if it's the first time you've changed the filter. Once it's been changed and if you don't over tighten it, you should have no problems removing it in the future. Most folks have a tendency to over tighten oil filters when they install them.

Thank you so much for showing the maintenance work. I could not tell if you did this but I recommend turning that oil filter 1/8 of a turn counter clockwise (loosen) just to make sure it's coming off before you put a nail hole in it. In my 50 years of engine maintenance I've had 2 filters that would not come off without extraordinary effort and sometimes you may not be in a position to fight with a stuck filter.
@Tulasendlesssummer
7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up! How did you end up getting those two filters off?
@talvalon999
7 жыл бұрын
I'll try to cut to the chase... it was many years ago and I was using a filter wrench of poor quality. Quality being measured by when you exert pressure on the wrench it does not spread pressure on the band of the wrench evenly. So the wrench creased the filter and once that's done the strength of the filter housing is next to nothing. The filter collapsed. Removal of the filter involved using harsh language , giant lock jaws pliers, and tearing away the filter piece by piece. Oil was everywhere... I wisely threw the filter wrench away after that. The second time it happened I got smart(er), I could feel the filter housing starting to crush and so I pushed the filter wrench to the base of the filter where it's strongest, after some serious effort it started to turn. I've also heard of people trying to break the rubber seal with a razor blade but never tried that.
@gg5115
7 жыл бұрын
Drive a big screwdriver all the way through the thing. Like Billy did at the top, but drive the screwdriver all the way through to the handle, as close to the base of the filter as you can. Now you've got a nice handle sticking out of your filter. You'll get it off then.

I love the idea of an old Whaler for a dinghy. What do you do with it when you have to go into a marina? Or when getting fuel? It's not like you can haul it up on board... Do you have any problems from others while at a dinghy dock? Do you find it trying to ram you in a following sea? Aren't you worried about theft at night? Thanks for your videos and your time. You guys seem very happy and it's awesome that you get to do this at a young and healthy age. You really are blessed and I hope you know it!
@Tulasendlesssummer

we just pull it close to the stern and take everything slow so it doesn't bump into the swim platform too hard. It doesn't ram us on following seas because we tow it far enough back. It does ride waves a little though and thats why its important to have a bridle system that will absorb the shock.

David Ellis they definitely have experience with sailing. Tula, the channel’s namesake was a sailboat. Billy sailed down to Florida by himself and that’s where he met Sierra. I know they’re looking at a catamaran. I have a feeling they’ll let us know about their new boat when they’re ready. I listen to the Anchors Aweigh podcast, and I feel like Billy and Sierra would be great guests there. It’s a podcast run by the Freedom Boat Club owner in Lake George in NY. He interviews all kinds of boating related guests. I think that would be a great setting to get to know more about their boating background.

I have mixed feelings about running the motor to warm it up b4 oil change. If you do it cold, it has had all night to drain the engine down to the pan. ALL the oil is there and the filter is drained. If you run it first then all the crap that has drained down into the pan gets circulated and not all the crap will be drained. So what is the point of "warming it up"? There might be an argument if you pulled the drain plug then it might "flow out" better.
@onthebeaches
7 жыл бұрын
I was taught because it's warm it would come out easier but I like your point too.
@lastniceguy1
7 жыл бұрын
I was a mechanic all my life and taught the same thing, but when the oil is circulated (warmed) it takes forever to drip down. It'll drip until you put the plug back in so you really aren't getting it all out. I do mine cold. I'm talking cars here, and my boat because I pull the plug on it too. Not sure how pumping it out would be.
@Taperedend
7 жыл бұрын
Simple answer is contaminant entrapment. Oil by design functions better on a molecular level when it's warm. Oil has anti foaming, detergent and viscosity agents which work more efficiently when theses molecules have expanded ie. warmed up. Oil traps contaminants and excess moisture that can be found in a crank case, oil galleries, weep holes etc. A lot of these contaminants get stuck in oil galleries as the engine oil cools and drains back to the crank case. By keeping the oil warm and moving, this dirt/metal shavings etc stay suspended in the oil and become trapped by the filter. In short you have a higher likelihood of removing more contaminants from warm oil than cold oil. But, I too am an automotive tech that has the luxury of allowing all this oil to drain from the oil pans, I don't know much about boats, although I assume the oil theory is very much the same.
@jacknimble1
7 жыл бұрын
Taperended has the correct answer. It is all about suspension of particles which is much more important than getting every las drop out.
@eosjoe565
7 жыл бұрын
Warming is also pretty much mandatory when using a sucker. Suckers do not work well with cold thick oil. The suckers get about as much oil as the drain plug as you can stick the pickup tube right against the bottom of the oil pan. I've torn apart small engines after using the sucker and there is just a couple table spoons of oil remaining.
