Edward Turner would be so proud, the first Speed twin was designed in 1937 and it's still a force to be reckoned with. I had the pleasure of riding a friend's Tiger 100 in a Cheney frame, sounded like that bike, and was smooth as a turbine. Aw man i gotta respect that he put his all into that race and kept up with proven, tested, reliable Japanese machines with something he built in his garage. He almost got third. Very good rider too. I'm all about those single cylinder, simple, reliable, japanese motors. But i gotta say that bike did surprisingly good while it lasted. Taken out by a simple wiring issue. An awesome experiment and build. If they cleaned up the wiring a bit it would have won 3rd for sure. The 2nd place victory was great too, but i think if you just put him on a YZ250 or CR500 he would win first place. But this more so an exercise in craftsmanship and the build than it was about winning a race.

The motorcycle companies have straight up FAILED consumers by not offering proper 350cc and 500cc twin cylinder dedicated dirt bikes,, with super heavy flywheels and glassy smooth twins with counterbalanced engines, electric start and the beautiful sickening roar of a 180 degree parallel twin. A twin cylinder engine can be run down to 700 rpms with glassy tractor smoothness, going at a snails pace through the heaviest of brush and trees. You can run a paralell twin much, much slower than a single, and you can also run it at much higher RPM's. A twin simply works better in all conditions, because there are twice as many engine pulses, making traction better, power is more linear, and the engine inertia is much less due to the parts being 50% smaller, with smaller valves, smaller connecting rods, and smaller pistons, meaning less vibration, and much better high RPM performance. But the sound, is the single most important thing. If you've ever heard a Honda CB360 with 34 horsepower. The CB360 is one of the meanest, nastiest sounding engines ever. The single cylinder bikes bike sound like.... They sound awful.

I like the 3 cylinder 2 strokes. The second of heaven! But yes I agree with you!
@EarthSurferUSA
Жыл бұрын
It was straight up free market, moral free market, that replaced the 4 stroke engine with 2-stroke singles, and the price of a bike went down a lot. It is government economic fascism/force, that forced the new 4-stroke on the industry,--no matter what the cost. Twins (esp 4-strokes), are too heavy in comparison and more costly to make. But you make a good point on the kind of power it can make.

I am really interested how the new triumph Motocross Bikes are going to turn out. I hope they go for an exciting alternative route, as they also do with many of their other bikes. (Like 3 cylinder Enduro for example). I personally have wondered for a long time why no manufacturer looks into twins (either V or parallel) for Motocross anymore, so maybe a return of the V2 mx bike like the Aprilia back in the day would be cool. Also but this is just a dreamer speaking, maybe they actually have the guts to build a 500 two-stroke just for the fun of it. I mean if I had to pitch that internally to the high ups, I'd just show them prices for clapped out KX500s from 91 on eBay... If used bikes are more expensive than new ones, one should like to think there might be a demand there

Peter. The AMA doesn't allow twin cylinders, that kind of killed it. You also have to have a production bike, meaning more than 500 are made. It was set to reduce the price of racing. They didn't want the factory race bike to be one off million dollar bikes. It was good and bad. A new bike can almost compete with the factory race bikes. I would love to see a twin cylinder race bike. I'm also excited that triumph might have some new technology.

I have a good friend, (62 years old now), who would show up at the track with a bike he put together with wild suspension and such for the early time. I met him in 84 when he brought a Mt. Bike with his front suspension on it for us (Nuke Proof in Michigan back then), to make and sell. He then offered to Harley, (but they turned it down), and today, built and owns a 60,000 sq/ft building and makes all the Indian motorcycle gas tanks and tins, (along with other customers). It all started when he was 8 years old, and his Mother would not let him have a dirt bike. But he could not keep up to the older kids on the new dirt bikes, so he put together his won mini bike in the garage. No brakes, a string around his thumb for a throttle cable, and his Mother sees him riding around the yard with it. Her thoughts, moral thoughts? "I can't take it from him. He built it." A real hero was born that day.
