I apologize for some of the footage going in and out of focus. I had no idea my phone was doing that until after the recording. I would describe Racing Jam Chapter II as more of an update to the original Racing Jam, rather than a sequel because it re-uses a lot of the same assets. There are some improvements such as 3 new unlicensed cars, different physics, more camera views, "dummy" cars on each course and a hidden mirror mode. However, the game only has 3 circuit courses and 1 touge course, as opposed to the original which had 2 circuit course, 1 touge course and 4 gymkhana courses.
The night course in Chapter II is very similar to the night course in the original game, but Chapter II added 2 more corners to add to the craziness. I imagine they revised it for Chapter II because the original night course was the more beloved course in the original. The winding road touge course in Chapter II is identical to the one that is in the original game. However, you can only race in the uphill direction as opposed to both directions. So of the 4 courses that are in Chapter II, only 2 of them are completely new and the gymkhana courses (as well as the ability to tune your car) are completely absent. In my opinion, this is what makes the original Racing Jam a superior game. It's also (probably) the only arcade game in history to have gymkhana racing. The physics in Chapter II are also less realistic and choosing the manual transmission does not seem to give you an advantage. Once you release the clutch to take off, you don't have to touch it again. There is no penalty for using it incorrectly, like there is in the original Racing Jam. Also, Chapter II was only released on the Konami NWK-TR hardware, unlike the original which was released on the NWK-TR and Cobra. So despite being a newer game, Chapter II does not have the same graphical detail and sound capabilities as the original game. Despite the shortcomings, Chapter II is still an incredibly fun game. It just doesn't have the same "wow factor" that the original Racing Jam has. The suicide battery on my Chapter II board set has died so currently, I am unable to play the game until it gets fixed. Once it does get fixed, I will be able to play it on my Super Deluxe machine with all the controls working. I still plan on making direct capture, full playthroughs of both games with commentary.
