This was great. I'd love to see one similar to this that deals with tight hairpins and/or acute corners...I've always found those to be conceptually a bit tricky. Let me rephrase, it would be interesting to see a video like this in which the corners are tight enough that it warrants at least considering using the handbrake to rotate the car, and how that affects (if at all) the ideal racing line in that situation.

This is a great question, I'd also like to see this covered.

Great explanation Covers probability well i.e. you know what is before the apex, but you don't know what is after it, so better to build in wriggle room for the unexpected on the other side. Another thing novices need to learn driving at higher speeds is to be easier on and off the accelerator and brakes so as to maintain grip. Hard braking and brake releases (same for accelerator) results in the car's mass being thrown more violently forwards, sideways, rearwards which all compromises each tire's contact with the road surface, and steering control. This is especially so for 2 wheel drive cars.

It's from rally stuff lection in Russia I've attended to: 'It's well known that the ideal racing line is a straight line. Rally drivers are trying to follow it...into the Forest(from seatplace). Right, into the forest. So, we are here to learn about safety on rally'.

I really need to scrape the cash together to get up there sometime. So much to be learned from professional instruction on a closed course. Manchester area police don't generally appreciate people practicing their apexes. ;)

I'v been thinking about this recently. Very well explained. Basically, early apex is always bad, traditional apex is faster but more dangerous, late apex is safer and more consistent.

I know the comment's a bit old, but no apex is bad or better per se. Considering a situation like a long straight coming into an esse leading into a hairpin. There's no reason to late apex the first two corners, so you drive an early apex into the esse, sacrifice 2nd corner and setup the 3rd corner hairpin with a late apex.

No necessarily. You may need to late apex when connecting a series of corners and it is faster. It is fast to late apex before a straight to get better top speed at the end of the straight. It also dentífrico you have a momentum car or a high torque car.
