The one thing that makes my stomach turn about black activism today is the depiction of white people as monolithically racists and oppressive, either overtly through violence or passively vie compliance. Black activists seem to mostly be just like white racism in that they view the black and white racial groups as being intrinsically oppositional to each other regardless of individualism and their aim is for their group to win. Theres no way for alliance and cooperation between individuals of different races within that framework. Its not an end to racism, its a movement to establish a new kind of racism.
@deepeyes29
3 жыл бұрын
I recognize that you wrote this a year ago. I like that you have started asking difficult questions, but I also have to ask if you see the glaring hypocrisy in decrying what you consider the monolith characterization of white people by modern black activist, while monolithically characterizing black activism as inherently anti white. Overwhelmingly, black activism is about, as Mr. West describes, fundamental and transformative equality. Part of that comes from acknowledging that no one is completely immune to the effects of societal conditioning. You can't just opt out of a system that surrounds you, nor passively ignore it's power dynamics. To undo and rebalance requires action. Racism, patriarchy, sexism, ableism etc require us all to do self reflecting, to be vigilant of our own behaviors, and to endeavor to help the most vulnerable and disenfranchised of us.
@ninagrace-lee8323
3 жыл бұрын
deepeyes29 Both of your comments are very good. I think the OP’s comment still stands because what is fundamentally abhorrent about black activists today is that labeling all white people as inherently racist and not able to be redeemed from it is not historical truth. Dr West literally breaks it down in the video. We do NEED white people to make moral choices and the focus shouldn’t be on performative activism, “sit down and shut up” doesn’t work here. Change has to happen all around and it’s less likely when we are calling them demons and unable to re-think their moral stance. It’s like we don’t even want a coalition anymore and it’s ripping the country apart tbh
@deepeyes29
3 жыл бұрын
@@ninagrace-lee8323 Thanks for taking the time to respond. This is one of the common disconnects between black people and black activists, with potential white allies. While it may feel that black people are actually saying that, that has never been the case. Black people are looking for shift--that is to say, that white identifying allies would view and commit to fighting racism and white supremacy as white problems to be corrected, rather than a black problem with which to empathize. It can be frustrating to ask for justice, and to be repeatedly denied it. Fixing this cannot just be a black issue. And part of that means recognizing that the systems in which we live and work directly affect and inform us on individual level, and we have to be made aware of the lack of congruence between who we say we are, and what actions we actually take. I consider myself pro-woman ( which is not anti man) but I had to look at why I called my guy friends pussies and bitches at the gym when they weren't scrapping hard enough. And I felt personally attacked at what I initially perceived as anti male language--but then I realized that maybe 'not all men', but enough weren't doing the right thing; and that even in a small way, I might be contributing to that lack of safety. We all have a responsibility to address our blind sides. To say you disagree with the movement because the language is uncomfortable is natural, but what's the goal, progress or comfort? And real talk, if black folks thought that white people weren't ever going to get better, the dialogue and activism would have ended a long time ago.

His comments about August Wilson amd performance is what is happening right there with him and Joe Rogan. Imagining through dialogue, laughter, and candor a new vision of American democracy. A new vision of who we can be as Americans regardless of our racial or ethnic differences. How individuals make choices everyday as to who they are and who they are going to be. And kudos to Joe Rogan for these many engaging dialogues on his podcast as a model of how people from all walks of life can sit down and talk about the issues that face us all.

After all - speaking doesn’t equal substance to the post modernist, semi CRT infected. In in his view, Race Marxism is good you see , but only when it benefits Cornell’s silly agenda’s. Please tell me what someone would gain from suffering this? The knowledge that follows allowing you to Immediately avoid anything with his name attached to it because he is a pseudo - intellectual charlatan ! Man, I disagree with Cornel West on so much, but he is really making a lot of sense to me here. I guess it just goes to show that simply because you disagree with someone on certain issues doesn't mean that person doesn't still nonetheless offer valuable insights and wisdom. And there's definitely a lot he's saying here that I might differ with, but he's got a lot of wisdom and insight.

Listening to this I still feel that way you don't hear many people talk about the existence of "white supremacy" and "patriarchy" while also arguing that people should not be viewed based on only skin color or gender and pointing out those who have consistently advocated for those less fortunate.
