I find no joy in making these videos and I do them so that people understand this isn’t normal. I’ve made it known that I am not a drama channel. I’m a gaming commentary channel and I just look at topics people are talking about. Anyone that’s watched my content knows I’ve been hitting a wide array of games and topics surrounding social media. I will never stay silent against racism as I know that there are black individuals that enjoy my content. I would like to at least show solidarity with my people. Many of us don’t have voices or are platforms are stifled for even talking about racism. Please just listen!

Many of the things said in these tweets and chatlogs are absolutely appalling, and I'm glad more light is being shed upon them. Racism should never be tolerated under any circumstances, and I hope more people will learn that comments like these are simply not okay to say. I want to send a message to all of the people out there who have been discriminated based on your race, ethnicity, gender, or social background. Be proud of who you are. There are people out there who have and will continue to say hurtful things, but that doesn't mean you have to accept those comments. Never be afraid to speak out against hatred of any kind. This problem absolutely goes beyond Jackpot or "why can't people be normal". I've joined a few tournament Discords and see people treating racism like it's funny because they know it's not something they're supposed to do. Like "oooh you told me not to touch the stove so I'm going to touch it" and not "If you behave this way, it tells marginalised players they are unwelcome, and makes them have to pay an emotional/psychological price to play alongside you". I see queer folk being like "omg this person is so embarrassing, I'm becoming homophobic [skull emoji]" and it's not funny there, and it's not funny when done to black people either. I'm seeing a lot of comments from people congratulating white content creators who were racist in the past and have since changed their behaviour, and respectfully, that isn't the focus. We should be asking ourselves why people can join the Splatoon community and just pick up racial slurs as part of the vocabulary. There is absolutely a racism problem.

WHY CAN'T PEOPLE BE NORMAL OH MY GOD EDIT: (Sense I don't think some people read this in the comments.) I want to clarify that this is simply a reaction post and doesn't align with what I would say with further thought. This is a rhetorical question. I think the concept of normalcy tends to skew towards privileged, often able bodied white cishet people, used to box society into a fixed moral structure (mental and physical). I'm also an atheist, but have a habit of saying "oh my God" due to growing up religious. What my reaction means is; "These people are terrible. I am sorry for those effected and am enraged because of it." Thanks to everyone contributing all the thoughtful comments!

The age contexts are always important to me in stuff like this. I know for a lot of people, the age or context doesn't matter because it still happened. But it's something that actually separates the Chara issue from the entire Jackpot issue for me. Chara admitted and clarified that he still did it, as a parroting teenager [at the time he would've been fifteen] without context as to what the words actually meant. He's around 23 now, at least. That's six years of time to grow and reflect, and that's how you learn. Leafi's claims don't hold any weight because the clip on Spillway was _after_ the rework to the map. That's recent. That's 1-2 months ago. She actively contradicts herself and logically cannot claim she was 'thirteen and dumb' when there's recent screenshots or videos of her saying or laughing at these kinds of things. Q and Jared's statements are interesting, because I do get to some extent where they're coming from in saying that they're not responsible for others' actions. By technicality, especially given Leafi and Madness are _old enough_ to understand I would think, it's Not Q's _or_ Jared's responsibility. But you can, and should hold your friends accountable when they do or say questionable things, at least in my and many others' minds. Doing nothing is doing something. It's making a choice not to bother, because doing nothing is personally easier than doing something. The silence from friends or family when you see or are someone facing something is deafening. I'm glad to see they held themselves accountable, at least for the most part? But it is unfortunate that this kind of thing happened. Either way, I can criticize them, but these aren't my apologies to accept. I'm not black. I'd rather discuss and listen to my friends and those who are, to understand what they're feeling better.

And even if someone's comfortable with it, it doesn't change the fact that the joke is inherently racist, whether intentional or not. As a black man( 20s) who also enjoys Splatoon, this news doesn’t surprise me at all. White people (and I say white because that’s who it always is) for some reason, always feel the need to participate in this type of behavior because “ooooh, it’s wrong and I know it’s disrespectful, but who cares, I can say and do what I want with no consequences” that’s the attitude that comes across to me anyway. If you won’t say it in public, don’t say it in private, because truth always comes to the light in the end… Thanks Ken for shedding light on this topic with your platform. Honestly it’s something as someone who started playing VRChat back in May… the amount of people joining furry and/or LGBT+ worlds/spaces just to go up to people yelling the N word and so on- is a lot. I specify those spaces not as the people who fit those demographics being the ones who do so, but the amount of people who hate on furries and LGBT+ people who join end up loving to say some vile shit including the n word. Which makes sense, because usually one kind of hate goes along with another when someone is a bigoted ass. Just at the same time very annoying.

A lot of older gamers come from that 4chan gauntlet that dominated the social climate of gaming from classic XBOX days, and that virulent racism is almost a hazing ritual now in locals even if none of the kids are spending time on /b/ and SomethingAwful. Discord and other insular messaging communities keep that culture going by making echo chambers. It has always sucked for me to be a black + queer nerd on voice chat or in person at cons and tournaments. Splatoon's reputation makes bigoted people a bit less open with their prejudice, but get into the wrong discord server and you end up with people being racist over you having a dark skinned Octoling or wearing the afro. It's always been there unfortunately.

Jesus Christ. What can you even say about this? They spend time in a competitive community prided on being inclusive and this sort of behavior has been happening for years?? They were treating their peers and people in the community like this?? It's unbelievable. What's worse is that it's going to sully the reputation of the NA competitive community in Nintendo's eyes. Because of one groups actions, a large portion of this community that are responsible and loving, not to mention all the top players who are people of color, are going to have to answer for their actions. This is by no means the worst thing about this, obviously the antiblackness/racism and how it's affected everyone around them is, but its so frustrating as a person of color who wants to be in the competitive scene that because of these racists, we're going to have to fight even harder to be acknowledged. that these are the people the community has looked up to. It breaks my heart to think about the black players and other players who r poc and how they must be feeling. There needs to be a larger initiative to keep our community safe from this type of behavior. I hope them ruining their careers and screwing everyone else over in the process was worth it for them.

Racism needs to stop, we all need to stop being against one thing or another, we need to understand that we are equal. We aren't different due to our color of skin, we aren't different just because we're LGBTQ, we're not so different to be considered different. We're equal. I'm friends with people in the LGBTQ community, I'm straight, but I still love hanging out with them, they're some of my best friends. I usually try to give peace and harmony to everyone, sure, I may get angry, but it doesn't mean that I'm a bad person, we all have a breaking point, some people's are really high, while other's are really low. In fact, I try my hardest to make people laugh and have fun because that's how I am. I see white and black with no gray in the middle, but I still try to understand why people do what they do. And I even try to resolve any conflict. But nothing will excuse bullying, treating people like nothing, or downgrading them, just because they're skin tone is darker, or they're LGBTQ, or they're from a different part of the world. We need to stand up and stop anything that involves racism, people need to open their eyes and see that we're equal, we need to embrace equality, it doesn't matter what people do as long as its not wrong, because we're just people. I've been doxxed, I've been harassed, I've gotten hate asks and death threats on Tumblr, and even thought now I look back on it and can laugh at the absurdity of it all, I still fully left the community over it and just enjoy my own slice of it me and my friends made. Seeing all this with Jackpot doesn't surprise me, but the fact that it happened so recently and at such a high level with a LOT of publicity is utterly disappointing and disgusting. I'm black, and I'm queer, and it's always felt like the only acceptable part of me was the queer part. It sucks.

I'm a white woman. I cannot relate to racism, but I can relate to being judged based on my gender. It's genuinely disturbing that these kinds of things still happen. It must be so exhausting to be a black person (and especially a black woman). To have your entire identity be a joke to some people, that, in extreme cases, leads to violence and real harm. I don't forgive Jackpot until they show they are doing better, and Madness's silence is basically a death sentence for that asshole.

I’m seeing a weird pattern of events that any time I’m about to give someone a chance, something comes up to strike all of that down. My question is why it took so long for this to be brought up *after* the banner thing and championships and HOW the coach didn’t find out. How the heck did it get leaked. Jackpot got broke Fr. Getting annoyed with the “edgy back then” argument because I feel like people are just using that to excuse bad behavior. It was never okay to begin with and racial slurs weren’t invented in the 2010s. It doesn’t make it less racist. You don’t need to be racist to be edgy. People have called out racism in general for DECADES. 💀 AT LEAST ONE of them knew the KKK are associated with racism and hatred towards black people, so how tf did this *not* have racist intent? I knew what racism and slurs were that age, and I don’t recall throwing racial slurs all about as a kid (Even when I’m biracial because I’m racially ambiguous visually). No, they’re not “just words.” People KNEW by 13, especially if they’re from public schools or online a lot that racial slurs are bad. Right and wrong don’t get invented when you’re 18. Kids are not fuckin stupid. I’m starting to believe more people actually started caring because it’s their *fave people* being involved with the behavior and they wouldn’t have cared if it was someone else.

I guess it’s because Splatoon is a more friendly game and not known for “edginess” so it comes as a shock especially when the team is a world champion

It's really only ever talked about when a good portion of the community is racist or like in this case major community figures are found to be racist

@@destroyer4929I disagree. I think a community's ability to criticize a problem within itself shows that this community cares about this problem, whereas other team shooters might not care to fix those problems or believe they are real. Or maybe I'm just wrong and CoD will manage to not be racist despite it's past and the aesthetics and ambience it embodies

Thank you for uploading this Ken, it's important to bring awareness to these issues. One honest quetion I have is, how long is it ok to hold on to these screenshots? And I ask this only because I see the perpetrators are on the younger side, and again, this does not excuse them, it just seems that they might have been like 15 or 16 when these things were said (2020, 2019ish). Man, even Chara was dragged into this with screenshots from 2016 or something like that. I agree 100% it not ok to be racist or homophobe, I just wonder if there is no redemption for what you might have said/done when you were a kid.

every teenager had an edgy phase where they probably said immoral things. while it’s definitely not excusable, it’s important to teach them while they’re young so they don’t continue this behavior

It doesn’t matter. A person can only show that they changed by just being better. People get better at hiding their racism. But racism is also baked into the culture of white people, even if unintentionally so… it’s quite insidious. So on one hand, I kind of feel like it’s not their fault, but on the other, in this day and age of the internet… 2016 onwards… WE KNOW BETTER. White people know better. Non black people know better. Brown people know better. Black people know better and that’s why we are bringing it up still!!!!

i think this, as well as other small things like using dark skinned inklings is just examples of the black community getting disrespected by the splatoon community (which contains many minority groups)

Bro, I grabbed that Splat Tag Banner first day it dropped, not thinking much besides "Cool, new cosmetics I can use" Now I feel ashamed for even having it in my inventory forever. Can I unclaim a Splat Banner? I no longer what the image of the in game avatars of these people in my inventory! I pray Nintendo at least changes it to something else, not related to Jackpot

I feel this. I got it about a day or two after it was released. Now I regret having it in my inventory. Something does need to be done about that banner before it gets weaponised.
