I've tried today. It works well. After it, my swing (that was not bad anyway) was closer to that of the modern pros and I felt also less effort in the shot. I've also noticed during the exercise that when I release the tension I don't have to rush immediately, but leave the arm flow and accelerate naturally. Great tip.

revisited again, and "wow..." this is extremely important for me : Before at the fence position as you illustrated , I don't have any tension , but fully relaxed, my tension starts after that, at end of "shoulder rotation " with rocket face-down; will try your method today at the court! many thanks , Steve!

Great concept Steve - I was just realizing I was definitely hitting fastest point way after contact. Indeed w some forced pronation…but there was something else going on that your interesting fence prop idea helps correct: late hip involvement. My “portrait” position was so shallow that the hips were late to the game, the racquet had already made contact long before the hips finished their rotation. Your fence drill: (1). Forces higher portrait position so there is time for the hips to get moving (2) delays the arm to get the kinetic chain more properly synched Sorry for the long comment - wondering what your thoughts are on this. Thanks again for another interesting approach to correct a common and stubborn issue.

Hi jay First thanks for a very interesting post. I'm glad you like my fence idea. Yes, it encourages a higher take back. But I hadn't thought about the hip turn and your right.... It works.. I'm glad you like my idea. Many years ago I made a commitment to create a new teaching concept every day. Maybe small, but has to be new. That's why I've got this large library of strange and different lessons. Glad your enjoying the channel. Do you have any other tennis issues that I could help with? The act of pushing against the fence sounds quite similar to the feel that I have of sling shooting the whole hitting arm (with a relaxed wrist) right before the contact point. Prior to that moment, my hitting arm does very little relative to the position of my shoulder and torso. I don't think about hip movement at all, because it just complicates things. It might have moved, but it's more of a passive movement or side effect of the torso rotation.

@oneminutetennis, This sounds so interesting, I want to go try it. It's not clear though, I am pushing the whole head of the racquet? Just the tip? Is the hand touching the fence? Do you know what the mechanism is that allows for this trick to work? Thx
@Johnstage

This is basically the essential part of the biomechanics of the nexgen forehand. They retard the active phase of the swing for as long as possible and then accelerate through the loop not from the “power position” with racquet head back as in the modern forehand. There is more power but timing is more difficult. That’s why pros like Nole will use this nexgen forehand when he’s stretched or when the ball is deep and he can’t fully use his kinetic chain. His timing is crazy good obviously to be able to do this for deep penetrating balls.

is the portrait position to the back or the side fence? when you go to the portrait position, do you make tension by tighten up your hands and forearm or do you stay relax at that point???
@oneminutetennis
2 жыл бұрын
Great point. The tension in the portrait position is created by putting pressure to the fence. By leaning into the fence, the pressure is created from the forearm. The hand should only have tension during contact with the ball. Does that make sense? It's great that your enjoying the site. www.oneminutetennis.com

@@oneminutetennis appreciate the response. I do have a nagging question actually. And it has to do with the ATP and then WTA forehand. - The WTA - or the majority of women players - have the WTA swing because this motion maximizes the power output that they can generate in proportion to their strength? In other word, if they were to use the ATP forehand, all else being equal, they would generate less power, right? - so is it possible that if a guy who is coming up through the atp tour started out with a WTA forehand and sticks with it and learns to harness this power, wouldn’t that equip with an advantageous power especially against players with tons of topspin like Nadal, whose topspin shots would easily fall right into the wheelhouse/sweet zone of the guy with the WTA forehand? I wonder if there are any real life examples out there like Soderling against Nadal or maybe it has never been attempted.
@oneminutetennis
2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting question I'm theory, yes. But. The reason for the WTA shape not being present in the men's tour is also to do with time. The WTA swing takes fractionally longer, and this wind up is almost impossible given the speed of men's tennis. Players such as Dominic Thiem had a WTA Forehand right until the age of 15. But then he had to change. Does that make sense? And thanks for a great question.
