when i do my radio calls once i get to the 5 mile and tell them my intentions i always add touch and go or full stop after the runway this way those in the area know what i am doing once i touch down. that is how my instructor showed my and how everyone in the dallas area does it. but i like trent's addi acronym. i am using that from now on. as usual great video trent.

@@trent_dyrsmid I think what makes this work better is that it is straight to the point on what you should do, together with the acronym. A lot of the other vids on this focus more on what you *shouldn't* do. That's not necessarily bad stuff to know, but you end up with a clutter of both the bad and good things. I'm new to the channel and enjoying working through the videos!

I make my calls as you described . Wish others would . I have a grass strip 2 miles north of a semi busy uncontrolled airfield. So i announce where I’m going and what I’m doing but not sure they understand. Yesterday afternoon did all my calls and explanation of where I was going to land and some idiot was doing a straight in with no radio calls and after a near miss he jumps on me . I responded , I made my calls , you didn’t and if you would have entered the traffic pattern correctly there wouldn’t have been a problem.

One suggestion would be to make sure you add the "left downwind" or "right downwind" on the earlier calls as I dont believe you had the tp direction in there until your base call. Not only is it helpful to others in the pattern but saying it out loud can help you as the pilot ensure you are following the proper procedures.

Trent, you make pertinent videos with helpful advice. Unusual material here on Yt. Anyway, today I turned 53. So I will embark on the same journey you did at 53. Wish me luck and I hope to meet you one day.

good luck man. i turned 50 last month. and trent was my motivation to head to flight school so latein life.. had a couple minor outpatient surgeries on my beak to make my sinuses clearer so i do not have to use a cpap.

Hey Trent this may be a shot un the dark and a complete waste of my time sending this request but I think if I don't ask would be doing (on some level) the aspiring aviation community a disservice in that the old adage (teach a man to fish) may resonate with you or someone as experienced. I'm a late entry into aviation as well, my goal is to fly WWII restorations w/ a local flying- flight museum (tora tora tora reenactments etc.) When ((not if)) I obtain my sport pilot rating...can I log "qualified time" in a T-6 towards that goal or am I not understanding what a sport rating can qualify me to do beyond Red Bull air racing or Olympic Aerobatics? This is definitely not my area of expertise so I would recommend that you read the regs because that is what I would have to do.

I really like one of the recommendations I got when I flew with a different cfi than my main one. He suggested that my 10 mile call include my intended runway. E.g. "mid Carolina traffic, Cherokee 6374W, 10 miles to the south, inbound for runway 20" His argument was that announcing whether or not you were going to land or short approach or whatever was less important at that distance than what runway you were intending to use. Made sense to me and so that's what I do. The rest of the calls you described are very much what I do.
@trent_dyrsmid

His idea isn’t wrong, per se. The reason I don’t bother with that on the 10 mile call is that it’s unlikely that anyone that is currently in the pattern is going to remember that you said that. You’re just too far away to be that important to them.

@@trent_dyrsmid my experience is that people will immediately respond if I pick the runway that isn't in use. E.g. "mid Carolina traffic, Cherokee 6374W, 10miles to the south, inbound for runway 20" "Mid Carolina is using runway 2" Better to know that earlier IMHO. And yes I do listen before speaking. But there are lots of scenarios where listening and knowing the awos can still be wrong. For example winds are calm and there are three people lined up at the departure end that you're not using. Or right before you got on frequency two other people announced for a different runway. These scenarios happen enough that the cost of saying the runway at 10 miles is nothing. IMHO
