I remember telling friends could songs were sped up to cram in airplay because they were off key, up an entire step or more. They improved it probably. I don't remeber the plates being that stupid in the last time I heard it. I might be wrong. The instrumental part is meant to be taken as a representation of overused comercial and unefective music patterns. What you probably meant was that the artists who composed and performed the instrumental part for these particular lyrics did a good job. I agree if this is what you meant.

Lot of people here think Lajoie was ahead of his time. As awesome as he is, that's not the case with this song: radio friendly bullshit has been a problem since at least the fuckin' '80s, it's just that most people don't realize it because that stuff either doesn't last very long in the public memory or it becomes a nostalgic hit. Every time I hear this song it just reminds me of that "You're Beautiful" song which was all over the radio around the time Lajoie did this. Trust me, folks: the past isn't that much different from the present.

80s? mah dude, radio friendly bs songs have been around for 80 years, not since the 80s. biggest boom they made in the 50s and 60s late 60s and early 70s tried to rebel against it but 80s and 90s video culture ressurected the "safe" artists like a rotten meal revamps the awful smell with serial farts. and there is enough of a crowd do cheer for the new clothes to keep the crap relevant.
