The pog plants or breathers are based on deep sea ghostfish ,the ghostfish feed on small animals that drift into their mouth like an underwater venus fly trap. Considering Hoxxes caves used to be an underwater region it makes sense that they are there. They probably feed on ambient radiation particles in the zone now after all the water is gone and or fester fleas and other small stuff

It's possible that Hoxxes once had a LOT more water than it does now. Multiple biomes allude to once being filled with ocean water. My guess is a meteor impact (whatever broke that huge chunk off the surface) probably stripped the planet of its atmosphere, evaporating almost all water, except that trapped in the ice under the surface in Glacial Strata. It's possible the Breathers may have been like tunicates, an underwater lifeform that mutated and adapted to surviving outside of the water. While an extreme idea, cave jellies and Breeders may have also done this as well. Perhaps whatever makes them float used to be used for buoyancy in water. This would imply that the draining of Hoxxes' underwater oceans was an extremely slow process, allowing for some life to have time to evolve. If it were a fast process, nothing could've evolved fast enough to survive. The giant skeletal remains we see in Fungus Bogs, Sandblasted, and Dense Biozone could have been creatures that once swam in Hoxxes' oceans. In a parody of how the dinosaurs went extinct on Earth to make way for mammals, the massive meteorite extinction event would have made life inhabitable for larger creatures, allowing the invertebrates of Hoxxes to take over. Some even speculate that the Glyphids are aliens to Hoxxes itself - that they came here somehow, and out-competed the larger animals that used to live here. There's many theories, but they all point towards some massive extinction event happening at some point, likely due to whatever broke Hoxxes' surface apart. And whether it was the Glyphids themselves, or a meteorite, the Glyphids and other invertebrates definitely benefited from it the most.
@cherryrook8684
Жыл бұрын
@@bugjams The glyphids do seem like they are not native to Hoxxes originally. Perhaps they arrived on a meteor or smaller moon that collided with it similar to how rockpox arrives now. There is also almost no organic life in the caves so they must be feeding on minerals or rocks to sustain their massive hives and gigantic lifeforms like the dreadnoughts, praetorians and oppressors

I’m 110% positive that the Cave Vine creature is a mutant subspecies of Cave Leech. They have very similar anatomy and very similar behavior. Vines even have a set of three smaller vines at the base, Leechs have the same thing. They seem to have evolved to feed off the radiation and like to touch the dwarfs out of instinct. I did scientific explorations of PNF-404, Hoxxes is a whole different beast but I like to think I know my stuff.

I honestly never gave the indivudal phenomena much thought but if you put it all like that, yeah, this place is actually creepy as hell. Makes you wonder what happened there. And the helixes and random organic growths, what the fuck. It's almost as if Hoxxes itself has a conciousness and is trying to adapt or reform something it has lost in that particular area of its' "body".

My head cannon on why the drawfs are able to survive this place is ether because the flush the radiation out of their system with beer. Or their beer to blood level unexpectedly acts as radiation shielding. Granted they could just… you now… not care.

Pretty good dive into my favorite biome. The connections to DNA were never something I really considered, works as an explanation for error helixes though. I would however like to point out how the wall eyes are also in Crystalline Caverns. This implies they were not caused by high amounts of radiation, and may simply be a very strange organism. However, considering the similarity between the two regions, it could also be inferred that they are connected in some way, possibly being the same area at one point. This leads into the other implication, which is that the effects of REZ's constant radiation bombardments are starting to seep into the Caverns over time, and possibly into other nearby regions in ways we don't know yet.

I always loved this biome, one of my favorites. It’s one of those biomes that give me a total sense of dread when playing missions around there. I also wonder, if that huge area was never bathed in radiation, what would it look like? I guess that it would be just be basically a huge part of Magma Core or a separated Crystalline Caverns region, or maybe something just as special as the Exclusion Zone.
