Hello Dave, I've got one for you... New GD-88 owner here. I've got a scan list of 4 channels set up and working but while scanning the screen stays on the whole time, eating up the battery. Is there a way to have the screen sleep while still scanning in the background? Am I missing something? Running the 2023-03-30 Firmware and programming with 2022-11-20 Radioddity CPS 3.3 [9.2.16]. Any help appreciated... I'm at work without a charger and my battery is almost dea...

I see this is a dual digital and analog radio, with dual band capability. While not marketed as a GMRS radio, could this radio still tx/rx on the GMRS channels while in analog mode? Thank you!

You should know the legal answer to that question.

Super late to the gambit but according to the store page, it can transmit UHF 400 to 480 MHz RX / TX, meaning it can hit the highest GMRS repeater TX frequency at 467.725 MHz. Whether or not it can do PL tones to activate repeaters in the GMRS band is another affair. Now, as I am sure you are aware and I am morally required to share, only a radio approved via FCC § 95.1761 "GMRS transmitter certification." may be used to TRANSMIT in the GMRS space during standard operation in conjunction with a valid GMRS license. If your life or someone else's life is in danger, you could transmit on those frequencies for the purpose of seeking help regardless what radio you're using at that time. Part 95 certification is NOT required to LISTEN to the GMRS frequencies. For educational purposes, theoretically speaking, if you have your GMRS license and the radio is good and does not have excessive spurious emissions and meets the general requirements to operate in the GMRS space like a certified GMRS radios (minus the general rule of a fixed antenna), and you obey the wattage output requirements, and you don't impede others' lawful use of the bands... You could fly under the radar with such a non-certified radio. Again, for educational purposes, theoretically speaking. Of course, this would be in violation of the FCC Part 95 rules and you would be liable to fines and other such punishments from the FCC if you were to be found actively in violation of the aforementioned rules.

It’s the excess harmonics that worry me about these cheaper radios. I appreciate you noting that these are “acceptable”, though I’d be curious if a lower-end Yaesu, Icom, or Alinco would have similar harmonics. I checked that FCC ID and it looks to be related to the Fujian DR-880UV, if anyone is interested. Cheers to Radioddity for trying to do things right! Is anyone working on Chirp right now? I noticed the ID-52A isn’t covered yet, just older radios.

Hi Dave, from my understanding there is no chip in the programming cable, the chip is in the radio, so you can swap another cable from a DMR radio and it will work, like TYT etc. I was told this by a tech support rep from RT Systems.
@adhancock79
Жыл бұрын
That is absolutely incorrect. The "chip" in the cable converts usb to serial data.

Why are we still connecting these things to PCs in 2022? Why don't they connect to your WiFi , get a location from GPS or WiFI location services , download local repeater settings from repeater book DMR database from DMRID, enter call sign etc and you are done.

Dave I know you are an engineer of some type but you called out APRS as analog. I know you know APRS is a digital transmission that sends your call and position. It uses FM but the data is digital. Please note there is no such thing as analog APRS and help stop spreading this misinformation.
@USAFJUNKIE
2 жыл бұрын
He's referring to how there's "analog" and "digital" APRS. The "analog" version is the normal APRS using a frequency modulation. "Digital" APRS is via the DMR transmission...or even the D-STAR version "DPRS." I believe you can do digital APRS through hotspots on all 3 major digital modes as well.
@thuff3207
2 жыл бұрын
@@USAFJUNKIE He does not seem to understand modulation. All modulation is analog and the data packet is digital. APRS under the original standard uses FM and two discrete frequencies for 1200 Baud. This is an old modulation so I can see the confusion since FM audio shares the same modulation. DMR is a more modern modulation that has a more efficient bits per hertz transmission. Note many data transmission started with FM and moved to FSK for more efficient bandwidth use. So for APRS the correction should be simply call it APRS and call the DMR tracking something like DMPRS. This is similar to the DATAR DPRS, all are digital data. transmissions.
@RKingis
Жыл бұрын
@@thuff3207It's actually set in the radios as Analog, and Digital APRS, and is stated as such to reduce the confusion between the two modes. You should really complain to the manufacturers who make these type of radios.
@thuff3207

@@RKingis I do not disagree but as a community we should not accept anything that is wrong and keep repeating it. I understand the manufacture of the radio software is to blame its just how to communicate with them is the problem.
