Dude, THANK YOU so much for making this GM-30 tutorial. I have a pair of GM-30s and my issue is that while I can hear a LOT of people talking in my city, when I try and talk back to them, they don't seem to be able to hear me. That is very frustrating. I also did not understand what the "DIY" channels in the GM-30 were used for, or even what they did. Your tutorial series rocks!

Wow, great! I’m glad you found them helpful. It truly is a great little radio. For the price? Not sure you could get more of a rig. I would like to see a better antenna come with it. But what can ya do. I’ve found that the mic isn’t very sensitive. I’ve had to talk a bit louder into mine. Not sure if they’re all like that or not. What else can I show about this radio. Going to do one on the programming software for desktops. Take care!

Joe, they could be using ctcs or “privacy codes” privacy codes allow you to talk on a channel with your group but not be interrupted by other users. Anyone else can hear the conversation but will not be able to chime in.

Hi Eric, Thanks for your reply! It is better late than never they say! I’m so pleased you replied! I had a thought a couple of days after sending my comment. I keyed up on a low power channel. I pressed some DTMF tones. I recognized the star, zero and pound key tones and figured out where they were! Now the keypad rocks! I also heard from Radioddity. What you wrote confirms what I now know! Hope you can do another video during the summer or early fall! Thanks again! Jim, WROX233 K7TQM

There is a gap. I've found that Radioddity's radios case doesn't come up high enough to meet antenna bases. The little gasket that comes with after market antennas doesn't seem to nearly be enough.

I just got mine a couple days ago! I was able to program a couple local repeaters and like you, I just looked up the function rather than reading through this manual. I wanted to mention the FM radio (press and release the top side button... what is that, a dash?)... you can type in the frequency like you demonstrated with tones. FM will stop and switch to the GMRS frequency if signal is detected... kind of handy when you set the radio down to do something else and want to listen to FM radio.

Why use DCS instead of ctcss?
@backcountryamateurradio

Fewer people use DCS, which means less interference. But, once that squelch opens from someone else in your group, you're going to hear people using that channel as well. Not really a great way to deal with that.

When trying to set tones for a specific repeater on a specific channel, does that not change it for all the channels?
@backcountryamateurradio
4 ай бұрын
Maybe I have old firmware, but it should only change the tone/code for the channel you've selected, as it is programmed to function like a GMRS/FRS radio versus a ham radio where programming is initiated in VFO. Great question. Thank you.
@ToddHa

Totally agree that DCS is better choice than CTCSS. On some radios, you get both both (DCS +) & (DCS -) Which means you get to use the Inverted DCS & non-inverted DCS codes. Which doubles the total number of useable Tones for group(s). CTCSS doesn't offer Inverted Codes. Also, there are fewer CTCSS tones available. DCS offers more tones & more options. Some GMRS / FRS radios offer a DCS Encrypt Mode. Which makes it almost impossible to detect the DCS Tone used by an ordinary GMRS/FRS radio (using SCAN). Retevis Radios are known for having DCS Encrypt Mode (NOTE: DCS Encrypt does not scramble/encrypt the voice conversation. It only alters the DCS Tone to make detection more difficult). Not impossible to detect, but certainly, is difficult.
@backcountryamateurradio

Thanks for bringing this up. -DCS is something I've wondered about but haven't seen it in my own radios. I feel like the adaptability for digital signal manipulation really is endless on radios. I may need to get some Retevis radios to play with the encryption mode you're talking about. That is very interesting. Thanks again for your insightful comments!

Hello! I’ve enjoyed your many videos on the GM-30! I watched some of them more than once. I am totally blind! I use the voice prompts as much as possible even though not everything is voiced! I can utilize the channel mode reasonably well. I somehow lost my CTCSS tone for my local repeater. I reset my radio and I managed to get the code back in again! I can’t figure out the keypad so it can be used to program in tones, frequencies etc. the keypad seems strange to me as well. It doesn’t feel as if it is a full keyboard! The menu key, the up down me! buttons and weather keys comprise the top of the keypad. 7, 8 and 9 are at the bottom so it seems. I try typing 003 for channel three and I get nowhere. I go to frequency mode only to find I’m not typing them in correctly! How do I fix this? What am I missing? I want to hear VHF UHF channels on my GM-30 radio but this is alluding me! Thanks Jim

What you're seeing is not really channel/vfo split. Sadly, I don't think this can be done. Haha! well I'm glad you appreciate the view! I'm very blessed to be so close to these mountains. This antenna is a bit of an experiment. When I figure it out it probably won't be worth the effort! Originally, it was an 18" Abbree, designed for ham radio bands. In an effort to reduce the length to make it more resonant on GMRS bands, I cut it down with no great results. Part of the problem is the loading coil in the base. I have yet to trim there but I figure it will bring it close to desirable for transmitting. So for now, I cannot recommend using an Abbree... stay tuned though, I'm going to track down antennas for GMRS.

What frequencies are vhf fire? And are they open or truncated? You need to get into VFO mode and be able to scan in there. So hold the “menu” key until the channel indicator goes away on the right side of the screen. I would then punch in the low edge of the frequency range you need to scan and then scan up from there. Thanks for this Basic Video, I'm a Newb and needed this level of instruction so again thanks so much. I was out with a group last week and all but 2 of them had midland gxt hand helds that have some pre-programed DCS channels (23 - 50) selecting DCS channel 41 results in transmssion on channel 22 with their selected DCS privacy code that was then manually set at 31. The two of us with the GM-30 selecting channel 22 and DCS code 31 could not get connected with the midlands. Someone mentioned we might have to input the frequency associated with DCS code 31 instead of just selecting the DCS code #31. We did not know how to do that. Does that make any sense that this could have been the problem? Are there any quirks about RX and TX using a DCS code? Any advice is appreciated. Also, can i do the firm ware update with a Mac and does the radio show on the menu somewhere the version of the firmware currently installed? What upgraded antennae would you recommend?

So Tx and Rx has to be the same code #?... and the same for each radio in the group
@backcountryamateurradio
2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, if you do not have the same code on TX/RX then the only other radio that will hear you will have to have its TX/RX codes inverted. for example: Radio 1: Tx code 4/Rx code 5 (which means it is sending out code 4 to any radio listening for code 4; So radio 2 will need to be set to Rx code 4). Radio 1 is listening for code 5 (Radio which means Radio 2 needs to Tx on code 5). Thus Radio 2: Tx code 5/Rx code 4. It also may mean that you're only going to have limited radios in the group. The best solution is to match all the codes and pick one. Take care out there!

@backcountryamateurradio
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up. I'm planning on including the idea of using "no tones/codes" in a video I'm working on because, as you say, it's possible to hear everyone which means you're more available to respond. Likewise, others ought to employ this practice. As for range up there? I wish I'd had somebody to test with that day. But I imagine that with the low power setting I could have easily hit another mountain top 35 miles away, as it would have been line-of-sight with no obstructions. It's not a fair test though. I've used the the GMRS band at 4 watts on the Btech GMRS-V1 (NA-771 Antenna) to communicate to home from small folds in the mountains 6 miles west of the house. That obstructed line-of-sight test left me impressed by the effectiveness of the band. Have you also had impressive experiences with your GMRS?

@@backcountryamateurradio Yes, I love the band. I use a base antenna at the hunting cabin which really increases the range. Also use a mobile magnet mount on the car.
