There are times where I think, especially live (which includes the visuals, how they looked/styled themselves etc), this was one of the most interesting times for the band. They are literally right...in...the middle. They've thrown off the shackles of Creep one-hit-wonderdome, Blond Thom is gone, but yet you still very much have the 3-guitar attack during this era, which they've now mastered to the point where they can use those fuckers like a symphony, with Ed's twinkling or droning atmospherics, Thom slicing in with the chords of rhythm guitar, and then Jonny's lead lines swooping and diving over all of it with the literal "Bends". And then style wise as well, the flamboyance of PH is gone, but compared to Thom's 'look' for the OKC-era (which was essentially, 'I'm having a nervous breakdown, in cargo pants'), here you have the almost punky reddish haired Thom, a lot of times busting out the shades (ala the "Just" video)...I dunno, im rambling here, lol. Its just interesting I guess to see this last twinkle of when RH were in any remote way, 'Rock and rollers'

someone in a comment from the US music video for high and dry mentioned something like this. at this point radiohead were a bit like a punk band playing noisy alt rock with thom having those greasy spikes. it’s interesting to see this version of them before they went into a completely different world they’re still exploring to this day.

Well that shows the mileage this album has. Almost 25 years later, you're still deciding which is your favourite track... I think that's because Sulk is the odd one out on the album. Most of The Bends could be disparagingly called overgrown teen angst - some tracks like The Bends were already written even before Pablo Honey was released - and everyone including the band themselves see OK Computer as their mature album. But Sulk is a precursor of Let Down and Nude. It's interesting that it was the last track to be written and recorded on the Bends sessions, by which time Let Down was in gestation, and Nude was coming together shortly after that and then first played live in '97. Thom Yorke was crossing the bridge from an extended adolescence to adulthood between The Bends and OK Computer, and these three songs are the ones that most clearly articulate the great disappointment of adult life. Which seems odd coming from a music royalty such as Yorke, but then he's always had a rare ability to step outside of himself when writing. Sulk becomes more relevant and more powerful as we get older. Most of us are not breaking the mould (just like your Dad, you'll never change), not getting over hurdles (you bite through the big wall, the big wall bites back). In Let Down, disappointed people cling onto bottles and feel like bugs crushed in the ground - which charts the course of so many adults into quiet desperation and alcoholism. And then Nude paints the darkest picture of this beaten man, who's given up on having big ideas because they're not going to happen, and his frustrated desires lead him into a world of masturbatory fantasy - 'you paint yourself white... you'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking.' Anyway, in short, I agree - Sulk is the track I find myself coming back to most often on The Bends after all these years.

Strange Attractor Your comment is nearly a year old so s’cuse me for the random reply lol. But what an excellent reading/analysis on three distinct songs and their hidden(?) interrelation to one another. I never would’ve connected them to one another. But then again the timing of each RH is extremely vital if you wanna attempt to understand the feelings behind it. Though when I think about it even looking at Thom’s vocal on each [song] can give snapshots into frame of mind for each hypothetical person in a specific age group or area of maturation. The energy/dramatic (tenor) pomp of Sulk is entirely gone by Nude. Someone surely needs to pick your brain about more song meanings lol. Anyways excellent analysis, it’s definitely something I’m going to read back on-as I’m still in my “sulk” years lol.
