Yes I'm not a fan of the 2 Micro HDMI connectors that seem prevalent on SBC's these days. 1 full sized HDMI connector is the much better option IMO.

It’s all because of integrated circuits. There hasn’t been any revolutionary breakthrough in the actual computer architecture design. Computers from 60 years ago work fundamentally the same as computers today. Only difference is that the CPU is a single integrated circuit, not something that’s taking multiple server racks because it’s assembled out of individual transistors or vacuum tubes.

I bought N100 mini PC for my parents and while I was setting it up I connected it to 4k monitor. The only time I saw few stutters while working on it was when graphics drivers were installing. After that smooth as butter no matter what I did on it. W11 runs really well on it. It runs even better when I got my hands on Winget and removed all the bloat Microsoft put into it.

I couldn’t agree more with this board not being cost competitive. Personally I prefer the Trigkey G4 mini PC for about £150. True it doesn’t have 2.5 gigbit nic but it does have an 500GB NVME, case and 16GB RAM. Once you add all the bits on the Trigkey G4 mini PC becomes cost competitive with this board but YMMV. Either way a really interesting video. What I will say is that for me the n100 CPU is a Pi killer given its hardware video transcoding support (QSV / VAAPI) which ARM chips lack.

As long as lemmings are rushing to upgrade to Windows 11 in their droves and dumping their old hardware to sell used online, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever in wasting money on these overpriced (for what they are) SBCs. I can pick up a used Lenovo, HP or Dell SFF PC with a 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 CPU and 4 to 8 GB RAM in it for less than the cost of most SBCs, somewhere around £20-£40 ($30-$50) at most - plus I don't have to pay extra for cooling, a power supply and a case. I even have a couple of "£10 PCs" happily running Linux in my home environment. Plus I am "being a bit green" and saving stuff going into landfill. Raspberry Pi's and other SBCs are/were fine at a $35 price point when they were being handed out to kids to learn a bit of programming on or sat on an electronics workbench for makers and hobbyists doing IoT work - if your SBC went faulty, it was cheap enough to buy another one. But they've all priced themselves out of consideration in most computing projects for me now. Knowing Linux well, and how to build and install it, opens up a plethora of cheap hardware alternatives that can be used for solving computing problems because Linux can be made to run on just about anything anyway - for a computer engineer like me, it's a paradise with so much choice. But if all you know is how to follow step-by-step videos on here in order to get anything done with Linux (you'll get nothing done crowbarring privacy-hating and bloated Windows 11 onto these devices) then you're restricted to using what others (like Chris here) put in a lot of hard work and time to make content on. We all came into this world knowing nothing - success and pleasure in modern hobbyist computing is very much a case of "effort in = reward out". If you don't put time into learning and problem solving on your own, you won't get the best out of it.

Always enjoy the videos. Fun everytime. My 13 and 16 daughters decided to build a paging and packet network, they have almost finished welding up the tower guy poles. We decided on the Asus Intel 13 Rugged Nuc running the J7425e processor, and it seems close to the N100 in performance with the N100 edging it out on some things. They are running 4 USB sound cards from masters communications, and direwolf a software sound modem. I really wonder what the performance differences are between the N and the J series are. Not many channels doing performance and real world testing on these edge decices that I know of.

Excellent review, as always. It’s a shame that more care wasn’t taken with the heatsink. An owner should not have to search for a copper shim in order to provide proper cooling. I also agree with your comment about the HDMI connector. One full size is better than two small ones.

that's science! to discover that the cooler properly making contact with a copper plate in the middle works better without the fan than the basic contact before with the fan is a vary happy discovery indeed. it makes me happy that the scientific method does prove without a doubt what works and what works better and there's no way to say the conclusion of this video that this sbc can be passively cooled without significant or expensive modifications or redesign.

I'd say it's not really intended to compete with N100 mini PCs at all; its market is the same as the Raspberry Pi's: projects, the 'makers and tinkerers'. Using an x86 CPU broadens the options for operating systems and software over what the Pi can use.

You can still have speed adjustment via Voltage adjustment or PWM duty cycle on 2 wires for the fan connection. I think you meant that it won't have "speed / RPM monitoring", but there's no reason it can't soft PWM the fan or hard PWM the fan using the MOSEFT which I'm sure it has (or equiv. driver circuit).

I would rather see USB-C with display out on this board with power delivery and full sized hdmi next to it instead of USB-C just for power and 2 micro HDMI. The board would still have 2 video out ports while being able to keep the small footprint of the board. Fan with speed controls would be also nice. For Windows on N100 you want to disable autoupdate for apps in the store and use winget to remove all the web experiece bullcrap to squeeze bit more performance out of the computer - that applies for every computer but even more for low power ones.
