I kind of get what Rae means, but the solo albums helped build momentum for the Clan though. It wasn't like the moment 36 Chambers dropped it went double platinum. dios bananos exactly! now imagine, since they featured heavily on each others album back then, the combined albums with the best material of ( Tical, ODB and Liquid swords) and then (Ironman, Only built or cuban linx, bobby digital, the pillage) then the epic Wutang Forever in between, then ( spreme clientele, uncontrolable substance, tical 2000), and those are just the albums until 2000. You would have at least 3 more multiple platina WTC albums, the WU brand awareness would be higher ( as all the marketing and promotion money used on the solo albums would be combined), and you will have all the wu brothers happy, financially and artistically! Together they could make that kind of money that Dre´s, Diddy´s and Jay-z´s are making, and that with that rough wu style that we know and like so much! Instead, now it looks like they (with exception of 2 or 3 of them) save their best bars and beats to their solo projects and that´s sad! So I definitely agree with Rae on this one.

Raekwon is right. We'll never see another rap crew that have 9 rappers, 4 of which are some of the greatest rappers of all time (Raekown, Ghost, GZA, Meth), Then you add Deck who can hold his own agaisnt anyone and probably had more standout verses than anyone in the Wu and you havent even mentioned ODB and arguably the greatest producer in the History of Hip Hop, The RZA. MK got better with age. U-God was ok, but even he had verses where he blew Ghost and Rae out of the water (Black Jesus).

True shit but if you really look at it, even though OB4CL had Raekwon's name attached to the project, the album damn near had all the Wu members on there to where it was pretty much a Clan album. It almost similar to the Eazy-Duz-It album. Even though it had Eazy-E's name on it, it took for the group to help the project flourish in order to shine light on Eazy and the NWA brand.

Nah, the solo albums helped in the longevity of the group IMO. If Wu was just 3-4 guys, then maybe moving as a unit could work. But 9 dudes staying on the same page, moving together, etc., would be difficult. Besides, like they always said, each album was still a Wu album, just featuring a certain member. Inspector Deck word play was out of this world . The fact that Deck and Ugod solo joints took along time to drop I think it killed there fan appeal if you wasnt a true Wu-tang head. Masta killa dropped knowledge and just hit you with the science. Gza took you through a story with his flow. ODB was fun style with no father to his style could jump on with anyone and make you grit your teeth and rock your head .There will never be another group with this kind of talent . He may be right about that. But they put out classic solo albums regardless. Maybe if they did what they did, but with structure in moderation...that would have helped? Like drop the solo's as they did. But, make it a goal/priority to have a Wu member on a track on every solo album. And then also on those solo albums have one posse track where they are collectively on together too! Have a trsck here and there with 2-3 members as they did do. But be sure to have incorporated that every memeber is present on every album to an extent.

It DOES weaken the whole... like how Inspectah Deck, U-God and Masta Killa all got mostly left behind as the focus moved on with certain individuals and other side projects.. Like Rae said, that's when egos really flared up... what if U-God and Masta Killa and Inspectah Deck were given the first solos and full attention from the WU? We'll never know, but I'm guessing that they wouldn't be seen as the second or third rate members that they are today, and most likely those albums would also be considered classics now. (I'm NOT AT ALL saying those solos would be better than the ones we actually got first..OK?) Only that "where you build, you will see growth". and the building that was done wasn't necessarily for the improvement of the whole.. as we have in this case, where some parts of the unit were neglected while others parts glorified and cared for.. There has to be breakdown and then he's gonna begin to loose when Voltron mainly focuses on strengthening parts that he thinks are his strongest and over time, as a result, develops other weak, neglected body parts. Each part is significant and each part is necessary for the health of the whole, even if some parts seem less important.. if they kept being ONE their objective and continued to inspire and push ea other by seeing who can "outwrite" ea other, while at the same time helping to build wherever lack could be seen, having the mindset of "strengthening you is strengthening me" they would've kept getting sharper and sharper.. I myself am not complaining... Even with the way it played out, WU has given us a TON of great music!.. U-God, however, DOES have reason to complain, and I find myself wondering along with him what could've been..

The solo albums wasn’t the downfall. Money and ego was the downfall. Who wants to keep doing group albums splitting crumbs that the label gives you with 9 dudes after Rza Divine and Power takes the cut, when you can get all the crumbs? That’s why they got away from rza on all their second albums. Him Divine and Power took the biggest piece after the labels got most of it.

i'm pretty sure that those solo albums would have already been forced on em before they knew what was what, there was probably no way of knowing that the group would get weaker through solo albums, especially when you're in the record label office signing million dollar contracts.

Spot on. All that solo action could have been structured as Wu spin-offs or simply dotted around more Wu albums. For me, most albums - from anyone - have 30/40% of tracks you skip through after the first couple of full listens. Imagine a series of Wu albums made up of a mixture of clan collaborations as normal mixed up either the best solo efforts from each member. All getting equal air. They weren’t managed right at all. If they were, we’d still have a strong hip-hop movement keeping it real rather than the pop music we have now.

These guys were miles ahead of the competition in the 90s. I used to buy other artists' albums just because a Wu member appeared on it, and they stole it on those tracks, except for The What? on Ready To Die. RZA's beats were immaculate, but they were 50% of the equation. They needed each other. Once they worked with outside producers, the allure started waning. They became so successful that they had to focus on their solo careers, so nobody had time to collaborate, which is why Rae's second solo had only two core Wu-members on it, and no RZA beats. It's sad, but it's the nature of the business.

Man, I think Wu-Tang had a pretty great run. Like @Loy365 said those first solo albums were truly classic and I think that Rae is just saying that the larger success of some of the members made other members envious or jealous. They all couldn't be superstars. They all got to drop solo joints though at least. Me personally though I really didn't like hearing any Wu-Tang shit that wasn't produced by RZA, True Master, 4th Disciple or a few other cats so that was a problem too sometimes.

Yo Rae just get over it man. Things never stay the same. You got the capacities and abilities to create something on your own. Just move forward.

Does he really tho? Ever since ob4cl came, he spent his whole career trying to recreate it or something close but falls short.

So? Just because the album sold a lot of copies, it doesn't mean everyone has to like it. It's not about album sales, it's about the music. 36 Chambers is rugged and raw, what Wu-Tang is all about. Just because you have the "more sales, better album" philosophy, that doesn't mean it's the right philosophy.

yes, 36 chambers and ODBs return to 36 were the absolute pinacle of whole wu tang. I dont even know some albums ppl are spittig here in the comments telling me they were the best.

I been saying what Rae said for years and ironically used the Beatles as example no group has ever done solo projects and been the same afterward

I pretty much agree. At best they should have at least dropped one more group album before the solos. And yeah, when the most popular members started going outside the core production team, it diminished some of their strength as a unit, because the RZA sound is so unique. True Master, 4th Disciple, Mathematics, they all had that vibe that made them, them. But who knows what's really behind that? They're still great, but I think he's right, their movement would have been stronger, if they stayed tighter as a unit, but that's hard with 9 personalities.....from the hood no less.
