Today, I’m thrilled to share never-before-seen footage of Rahim Takhori performing with an ensemble of musicians from Taloqan and Badakhshan Province. This footage, recorded at RTA in the early 1980s, was part of the Northern Afghanistan Folk program. What I love most about Northern Afghan folk music, particularly the styles from Badakhshan and Takhar, is the distinct use of instruments like the Ghichak and Dandombora, along with the vibrant background dances. There's always an enthusiastic "hype man" energizing both the musicians and the audience.
Rahim Takhori, born in 1934 in Khulm city (Tashqurghan) to Mohammad Ali, spent much of his life in Takhar province, where he was taught the Ghichak and Dambora by prominent Takhari musicians such as Mollah Mohammad Azam Khan. In 2001, he collaborated with Ustad Malang Nejrabi to produce an album featuring Northeastern Takhari-style music. He also participated in numerous folk festivals organized by the Aga Khan Institute. Sadly, Rahim Takhori passed away in 2007.
