Synopsis:
2011, one of the most significant years in the history of Indian Cricket, a year of which every Indian Cricket fan would hear and recollect India's World Cup Triumph, just like 1983. It was also the year when India was to tour England in July for 4 Tests, a T20I, and 5 ODIs to complete the bilateral series. With the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman, Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan being the pillars of a strong Indian team lead by MS Dhoni, who had just won a World Cup, and an IPL earlier that year (just MSD things), India had a chance to win back to back Test series in England, after their series win (1-0) under Dravid himself, back in 2007.
The 1st Test was already a special one being the 2000th Test Match to be played overall since the inception of the sport, 134 years ago (1877). India started well by winning the toss, eventually electing to field. Zaheer Khan gave them a perfect start by picking up Cook early in the innings, trapped in front, as plumb as it gets. England though went on to score a massive 474 runs loosing 8 of their batsman in the process, by the virtue of a brilliant double hundred by Kevin Pietersen (202*). Time for India's response with the bat. Once again, India got the start, with Abhinav Mukund and Gautam Gambhir opening the innings. The pair went on to build a good opening stand (63) before Stuart Broad knocked Gambhir over. In came Rahul Dravid - The Wall, as they say. India needed him to play a typical Dravid like innings for them to have a chance. Guess what, he didn't fail them. Dravid went on to play a magnificent knock, scoring an unbelievable 103*. What's so special in this knock, is that it came at the Mecca of Cricket - The Lord's. Dravid made his Test Debut at this very ground roughly around 15 years back (1996), and almost got a hundred (95) leaving him just 5 runs short to get his name on the Honours Board. He failed to score a hundred at Lord's on another two occasions (2002 & 2007), before finally getting one in this game. Although England went on to win the game and the series as well, this innings by the great Rahul Dravid is a treat to watch. Dravid was also announced the Man of the Series for piling up a staggering 461 runs at 76.83 which included 3 hundred-plus scores, sharing the award with Stuart Broad. It takes something really special to win the Man of the Series award even after your team has lost the series, and that's one of the reasons why Rahul Dravid is really a special player, an overseas specialist as they say.
