Around 40 miles to the west of Downtown Toronto, lies one of Canada's most popular and well known railfanning locations. CN's Bayview Junction is located in the scenic setting of the Royal Botanical Gardens, on the shore of the Burlington Bay, near Lake Ontario. Bayview hosts more than 85+ trains a day, all from CN, CP, VIA, GO, and Amtrak trains. 4 railroad subdivisions, and 2 different railroad companies also intersect here at Bayview, making it get really busy at times. The constant flow of trains, and the scenic landscape attract railfans from all over to this spot.
I visited Bayview on 2 separate occasions during my trip in early August. The first visit, was an early Monday morning on August the 8th. I stayed for about 4 hours, and caught some pretty decent action, and the tail end of GO's morning rush hour from Hamilton towards the city. Caught several VIA trains, VIA #82 being the first train that morning. VIA #80 also appeared later that morning with a friendly crew. Several different CN trains also came by, one of which was a very long and heavy CN #422 between Fort Erie and MacMillian Yard. Amtrak/Via's Maple Leaf train, #97/64 also came by with P40DC #821 leading the train to New York City. Also managed to get a Canadian Pacific manifest train on the Hamilton Subdivision, at the far end of the junction.
The 2nd occasion that I visited Bayview, was a Sunday evening on August 14th. Just moments after I arrived, CN 8917 (SD70M-2) led a rather short manifest train onto the Dundas sub towards London and Windsor. Shortly after, a Niagara bound weekend GO train cruised through the junction onto the Grimsby sub, with lots of waves from the crew. VIA #75 was next up, running around 20 minutes late. Interesting double set on this train as it diverged onto the Dundas Sub en route to Windsor. As I was packing up ready to depart Bayview for this trip, CN sent one final "goodbye" treat. BCOL 4644 (C44-9WL) happened to be on a manifest train that was switching in the Aldershot yard. The train pulled up all the way to Bayview, in order to switch a set of cars in the yard, which is around a mile down the line. Shortly after, the train reversed back to the yard, providing anther look at this beautiful engine. Mission accomplished!!
I will make sure to spend even more time at Bayview on my next trip to Toronto, sometime in the near future. It's a great place to hang out with fellow railfans, and see some great action in a beautiful setting.
All September long, I'll be posting videos from around the Toronto area (GTA) featuring GO, VIA, UP Express, Amtrak, CN, and CP trains! During my trip, I also crossed the border to Buffalo, New York. Lots of great CSX and Amtrak there as well! Stay tuned!
Thanks for watching! Watch HD 60FPS, for best viewing!
