On 6/11/15, The Midland Railfan was coming to Chicago to go on a trip out East, and we planned to railfan the day before he left on the UP West line. We headed out to Geneva, IL because a friend he knew lives out there, and the three of us railfanned for the afternoon/evening and caught generic freight action and Metra trains.
Riding on the way out there on Metra, usually I pay attention out the window to see if any neat stuff is sitting in Proviso yard, and it turns out there was a few things. Just after passing under the IHB mainline, a shipment of new commuter cars (I'm not sure what railroad or country they are for) from Nippon Sharyo in Rochelle, IL was sitting on the East end of Proviso yard. At Wolf Rd. waiting for a UP locomotive to hook on equipped with ATC (cab signals) so it could continue West, was a pair of CSX gevos on a grain train.
And sitting in the West end of Proviso yard by Berkeley Metra station was six GP15s, one hooked up to a C40-8, three of them hooked up to a MP15DC, and two were trailing behind SP 319, and some other AC44. (Later in the evening when heading back, we passed that train with SP 319 and two GP15s in the dark) There was also a SD70M and SD90/43mac duo, and two AC44s sandwiching an SD70M.
I'd also like to point out that while around Winfield station, we passed an Eastbound stack train that had a patched CNW AC44 leading and 3 other EMDs, which I didn't get a video of or pics given how fast it passed, sigh.
Once at Geneva, various freight trains passed with generic power, and the three of us got sorta lazy after a while and chilled inside the bar at the station, where 3-4 other freight trains and rush hour Metra trains passed, and we didn't really care. One consist that stuck out to me when we were inside just chatting, which I would have liked to have caught, was an SD70ACe leading 4 SD70Ms, all 5 units were elephant style, which looked pretty cool when they flew past leading a stack train.
We eventually moved to LaFox, to get a train or two before riding Metra back into Chicago. It had started raining, so we had to stay under shelter at the station while waiting. One train had an SD70ACe leading a UP C44-9W, with its K5LLA echoing nicely. Sadly now, La Fox is a quiet zone, meaning no more horns 24/7. A few minutes after that train passed, we weren't paying much attention, and we heard a freaking RS3L laying on the horn approaching fast. I started recording asap, and it was none other than UP 9788, an Ex CNW C44-9W gunning it to Global 3 by itself. For all mainline UP locomotives, its one of the very few that has an RS3L, and it sounds epic too. Then, our inbound Metra came, and we rode back downtown.
