Decided to make a compilation of these older cantilever signals from WRRS, Federal Signal, and WCH, as I've recorded quite a few over the years. These cantilevers are a very classic design, and look quite nice on pretty much crossing they're found at. It appears they came in rotatable (which would allow the overhead arm to be swung out from the road for maintenance) and non-rotatable variants, along with having extendable and non-extendable versions. The early WRRS ones typically feature Union Metal bases on them, though it seems later ones (from around the time FS took over) featured the much more commonly-found design of base, usually seen on FS and earlier WCH ones. At some point, probably by the 80s, WCH redesigned the base of these again, though this variant of base is quite hard to find. Pretty much all of these variants should be shown in this video.
It seems that while these were pretty much used all over the country, they are much more common east of the Mississippi than west of it. The L&N was an especially large user of them down here in the southeast, using nearly every variant it seems, and a good few can still be found on their former lines down here. A few other railroads in this area used them as well, though usually not as extensively as the L&N did. Several northeastern railroads also used them quite a bit, along with the C&NW in the midwest and the Milwaukee Road in the midwest and northwest.
