I used to do volunteer work in Pittsburgh for the homeless. There used to be a homeless/hobo camp on the North side near "the Trench" right beside the tracks. One day we went into the camp to deliver food and toiletries and when we got in the camp one of the hobo's was relieving himself by the tracks and often times the train conductor would toss out bags of bottled water to the hobos waiving at them along side the tracks. Well, I guess this NS conductor assumed the guy relieving himself by the tracks was waiting for one of these packs of water and the conductor threw the package from the train and knocked the guy over end with his bare ass up in the air. Pretty funny to see at the time.

I work as a yardmaster for the NS in Allentown, PA. One of my personal favorite stories is on my HA21 west end puller conductor who used to drive me crazy. He was an old head who hired in the 70's and whatever he did back then had a lingering effect! Everything started with "hey man!...." Being up in the tower I try to help out my crews when I can. I will try to watch the bowl when the stretch tracks to see if they have all the cars or where there are breaks. Well this particular individual would ask me ALL THE TIME. It would drive mennuts sometimes because I'm busy, I cant always do it. Well one night he pushed me over the edge. He calls and asks of I can see his track of 5 cars moving.....in the dark....this got a slightly animated response from me to say the least! So I set out to plot my revenge.... So the next day he's out working coupling cars on track 2. So he calls and when he is about to stretch to see if the, and the wording is critical, "track is moving." Sure enough away go the cars, he had them all. My response "Nope, track didn't move" about 15 more minutes of him walking back and stretching and asking if the track is moving goes by before he got to the end of the cut. "Hey chewie I had all the cars, why did you keep saying the track wasn't moving?" "Well because all that time the track stayed in the same place right between 1 and 3......but boy the cars sure did!" Silence..............

My Grandfather was an Engineer in the days of steam. In those days, brakemen walked on top of the cars, and sometimes they wanted to give Grandpa a hard time. So Gramps would pick a dozen or so mature cat tails, the kind that grow along the swamps. When the train got up to speed, he would lean out the window, beat the cat tails on the side of the cab, and treat those same brakemen to a dense snow storm of cat tail fuzz.

It's funny to hand a new hire machinist in the shop a grease gun and a few extra tubes of grease along with the instructions to get under the locomotive on the pit and grease every u joint and slip yoke in all the drive shafts. They give you that " look"because of all the extra grease you handed them, until they actually go down there and find out there are no drive shafts. Telling them to adjust the clutch is another good one.

I grew up in West Newton when it was the B&O. Back in the day, West Newton had a few industries like Admiral Homes, Altman's Feed and Grain, and a radiator factory. There used to be a good bit of industrial trackage and a team track. Some of the buildings are still there,but all the old trackage is long gone.

You have exposed the reason railroad workers learned (very quickly and for good reason) always took a position 20 to 30 feet away from the track to inspect a passenger train going by at speed. Failing to do so and then getting back in the cab of the engine or in the caboose guaranteed suffering the verbal wrath of the other crew members

I am compiling my stories and plan to publish them as a book. The title is: "There is Only One Time - Santa Fe Time." Brief synopsis: While working in Winslow, I heard over radio the Superintendent's discussion with his clerk about setting up a meeting. Several Trainmasters and a few other managers were to attend on Thursday at 10:00 AM. Arizona was on Mountain Standard Time, but the Santa Fe observed Daylight Savings Time system wide. So the clerk asked,. " Is 10:00 AM city time or railroad time?" "There is only one time!" came the reply that sounded like God Himself speaking. "Santa Fe Time! G. A. Foster

Towards the end of steam on British Railways a short train pulled by a 2 10 0 was waing in Blandford (Dorset, southern England). The guard blew his whistle and waved his green flag standing on the platform as normal. The driver opened the regulator and the train accelerated too quickly for the guard to get on the train. The train had to be stopped further down the line and the guard was sent on by taxi.

@ruffian2952
4 жыл бұрын
Have no fear, an occupant of the cab over time will learn by mere observation how to operate a 'train'. I did not waste my time staring out of the window. I learned who would get out of the seat to instruct me. I found in some cases that even some of the real bastards ( steam engineers) were really human when it came to parting with their experience. On some runs it was a given that running was a duty not an option. When firemen went out the window it was expected trainmen would pick up the slack. Most of the brakeman and conductors who had 'mainline' jobs could run if needed.

I'll give you one; I was a volunteer for a nameless railroad museum that will not be named and I had some guys place a fart machine in the office and I was talking to a conductor on the phone and after the call was when the bashing started (I was already serving a small suspension at the time) so this thing was farting and farting and they told me to stop, to which I replied "it wasn't me" and another conductor came out and said that I was a bold face liar; long story short, they got me so pissed that I went straight to my car and punched out the fender and I knew after that I was on permanent suspension (I served 4 years with them, and was suspended for a record 41 months and after I left they should have blacklisted me from ever volunteering again!!!)

Engineer: OK, air compressor is on. Yard Assistant attendant: come on, train xxxx engineer, the last car is still not release, come on! Engineer: roger, I am on it. Yard Assistant attendant: train xxxx engineer, what the heck are you doing there, still no pressure! Engineer: what? I've got enough pressure, gonna blow the hose. ----Meanwhile, the Yard Attendant: XXXX (Yard Assistant attendant), which track are you test on? Yard Assistant attendant: I am on track 8, no pressure, may be hose is not connected correctly? Yard attendant: you idiot! I called you to do the test at track 10, why the hell are you go to track 8! Yard Assistant attendant: .... Engineer: ..... 2 the winter of 2007, huge snow storm at northeast of China caused major train delay. Train N118: Shen Yang Station, passenger N118 approaching. Shen Yang Station: Passenger N118, stop at Shen Yang Station track 7. Train N118: Passenger N118, stop at Shen Yang Station track 7, copy.
