Filmed during 2010 and 2011.
We begin with some coverage of Ontario Southland’s
Guelph Jct Railway. Originally operated as the CP
Goderich subdivision. The railway runs from Guelph
Junction to the City of Guelph.
The railway was using exclusive MLW/Alco power at the
time and we see a trio of RS23’s making their way
northbound through the city of Guelph. Then we catch
them switching the industries in the west end in
conjunction with the GEXR, The industrial trackage is
connected to the ex-CN Fergus spur. The 2 railways co-operate to make the movements go as smoothly as
possible. After the switching is done the GJR turns on
the wye and we catch them coming back southbound
through Guelph.
On a summer day we catch the train heading towards
Guelph, just north of Guelph Junction. Power today is an
RS23 and an RS18u. They put on a very impressive
smoke show after clearing the MP 24.36 grade crossing.
We then watch them switch some industries in the south
end of Guelph before heading for the Fergus spur.
While living in Guelph we got the opportunity to catch a
westbound VIA training slowly making it’s way from the
station across the many grade crossings in the middle of
the city,
On Christmas Eve 2010 we are at the station to film the
extra long consist for the holiday season. A GE P42DC
powers the westbound passenger train.
At Guelph Jct we see a leased GATX unit and a Florida East
Coast SD40-2 powering a westbound freight. This is where
the GEXR connects with The Guelph Jct Railway. We are
standing by the Fergus spur.
Next we see the local doing some switching before heading
down the Fergus spur to Cambridge.
We catch it again crossing Whitelaw Road.
On another day we see the GEXR working up the north end
from Guelph Jct. After some switching moves they head up
to the GJRY interchange and the North West Industrial Park.
Summer has finally returned and we catch an eastbound
VIA with one of the newly rebuilt F40PH units creepy over
the level crossings on it’s way to the station.
I attempted to catch an eastbound VIA from our Condo’s
patio on Paisley Road, but I was seconds too late.
Next we catch the Ontario Southland heading eastbound
just west of Beachville. They have worked the CAMI plant
and are heading back to Woodstock. Power is ex-SOO GP7
383 and ex-CP RS23 503. We see them again 1 mile east of
Beachville. Finally we see them arriving at the CP yard in
Woodstock.
The Waterloo Central tourist railway runs between Waterloo
and Elmira. On April 2, 2011 they were running shuttles to
and from the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. We caught them
at Elmira, the Conestogo River trestle and again at Saint
Jacobs. The locomotive is a GE 70-ton of Pacific Great Eastern heritage.
