Playing today and I tried a route with 8 waypoints. Despite redoing it multiple times carefully it always warned about turning around in a station. There may be bugs (or just user error) when you are passing through a lot of stations without stopping. The bypass route looks like a great way avoid overly complicated waypoints, free up station tracks, and get around this bug/user error.

Another great video, Adekyn, keep 'em coming :) The note about city bypasses is especially useful - I already got caught off guard by that once when relying on RE1 experience. Waypoints is the way to go and what the game is designed to use, however what I often use as an alternative in the scenario @ 1:20 is just routing trains to a specific platform, in this case Halifax 1. If there's no other way for trains to jump over to the other pair of tracks, it works OK. It makes the gridiron seem very much redundant, but with the new "distance between trains" mechanic all trains on a line are being spaced out enough to not back themselves up either way. And if you leave the gridiron in place, it makes it easier to use the same tracks/platforms for new line(s) in the future.

As usual.. Very good info. One thing to notice is it always puts new targets at the end.. So if you can it is better to put items in (including waypoints) in order when possible. Otherwise if you have a very long line with 6 or 8 waypoints (the way I build, I normally use waypoints in 2's) it can get very confusing putting them in and dragging to the correct position.

I should start experimenting with separate freight/express lines earlier in the game. I tend to run automatic lines between all cities for at least early stages, but usually also mid stages. This is something I did more and more in RE1 with the new station types, and it just carried over to RE2. It would be a nice video - and probably a slightly more advanced one - if you could somehow do a comparison of the two styles. Like what is the initial cost of each of them, what is the revenue each style creates, is there a difference between the characters in RE2 (playing the campaign so far means I didn't do much in this area), other pros and cons like taking up more or less number of tracks in the stations and so on. I'm sure you already started thinking about the more advanced level videos for RE2, this could be one of them, as this level of detail definitely isn't necessary to just get started on the game. Oh, and I don't mention this in all my comments, but I obviously really enjoy your videos. Otherwise I wouldn't be making all these comments on them :)

The wagons are very simple and the simplest advice I can give in general is if available and you have a line that could use them, then by all means use them. I miss signal stations... In RE1 trains could just pick any rail line based on how busy it is, now I have to do all that manually with waypoints and it gets real old when you have 40 trains to setup. And especially when you want to make some changes to your rail you have to do some of that again, and again...
@AraRoodbuik
Жыл бұрын
Depends on how your crossings are placed at each station. If you come out of your station with 6 rail lines and you place the intersections you place over your entire 6 rail line, your train will automatically choose 1 of those 6. If a route to a certain city can run via several rail lines, the train will automatically take the shortest route to it. It only gets annoying when one of those rail lines consists of an express line. They will then be lured by freight trains that also use it because this is also the fastest way to their destination for them. Then you have to set it manually. That's why I always run an express line via one line but with two tracks. It is best not to have your express lines leave somewhere in the middle of your station, but always at one of the two ends of it. Your layout is certainly also important, which you have to take into account in advance. The sanbox mode is therefore ideal for experimenting first to achieve the best possible layout.

@@AraRoodbuik You missed the point. In the first game trains picked lines based on their use (with signal stations). Gridiron don't do that, they just pick the same line over and over just cuz its the "shortest". So I have to do that manually in a manner you described above. Again, that's really annoying to me and a big downgrade.

@@Sviatoslav_The_Brave Very strange. For example, I am now playing in sandbox mode. I've placed a station that connects two local businesses. 1 with a grain field and the other is a dairy farm. Both I must have them supply the city of Fortknox with these goodies. They both run on the same rail line but approach Fortknox station on a 6-piece rail line. I see my train with grain entering platform 2 and my train with milk waiting for a while, after which it enters the station on platform 5. Very bizarre.
@Sviatoslav_The_Brave

@@AraRoodbuik The example I would give is this: 6 paralel rail lines going from Toledo to Grand Rapids. Since there is no "choosing" based on use as it was with signal stations in RE1, trains will not distribute themselves on their own, I would have to do that manually now with waypoints. I know the example is extreme, but it illustrates my struggle best.

@@Adekyn100 It is the same on console. Fortunately :-). You can only add waypoints on tracks reachable by the train, which makes complete sense. During creation the train hasn't spawned so you can still choose the track, but when editing an existing line you can't simply swap to the 'other' track if you have strictly separated fright and express tracks. Logical in hindsight, and I like it. :-)

It sounds like you are trying to place your track into the city boundary of another city, maybe New York. Look for the white oddly shaped area around New York. You can't go through there with track to or from other places with track that does not touch track that touches a New York station. There is a trick around this. I demonstrate it in episode 14 of my Let's Learn Railway Empire 2 series near the beginning. Watch for the first setup of logs running to Topeka. That should publish later today - 6/5/23.

In general I like my lines to be more specialized. I really prefer point-to-point connections where you are only using one platform and you know exactly what is able to go to that platform. Second best would be gridiron max 2 so both directions of track can go to either of 2 platforms at the station. Third best is to add 1 or 2 more tracks. No more. Slows down too much.

I actually do use 4 track Gridirons quite frequently in cities .. But I never go bigger than that. I do it because 4 track Gridirons act like signal stations and auto select between the 4 terminals. I don't understand for the life of me why they would remove the option to put down manual signaling. I have two lines, and the train will wait for another when, it could be on it's way, but there are red arrows pointing to the train, and I can't even add signals to fix it, and I shouldn't be forced to make my tracks the devs want me to. jeez. So frustrating, and making waypoints do not help. Taking away manual signaling is backwards. :\ So the best way to double track. all the time. well sometimes I don't want that, but the game will force you to, so you can have single dead lanes without causing massive wait times. I don't understand it. and the gridiron is just plain confusing to use. I rather just make my own and use manual signals.
