Right now, it still exists: Hamburg-Altona railway station. Nevertheless, the city of Hamburg and Deutsche Bahn plan to close the upper part of this station. There are plans to replace it by a new station next to the suburban rail stop of Hamburg-Diebsteich.
This video (part 2) mainly deals with traffic of suburban rail trains. There are 4 tracks for the suburban rail system, placed on the underground level. These will remain in use. Above them, in the year of 2019 there is still the terminus station for long distance and regional trains. Suburban trains use 2 platforms. There you can change trains at the same platform which are going in the same direction, eastbound or westbound. For example, you arrive at Altona with a train of line S 1 from Blankenese. You can now either stay in this train and go to Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) through the city tunnel, via Landungsbrücken. Or you can change to line S 31, departing from the other side of platform - this train will head for Central Station via Dammtor (both eastbound). There are similar connections in the opposite direction.
Part 3 of this series will focus on the architecture of the station. (Nevertheles, they will not appear next week or the week after that!)
Sequence of scenes:
00:00 Trains arriving and departing at the underground platforms, and trains going to and from the reversing tracks
02:43 A train of class 490 going down to the tunnel, seen from the part of the station for long distance traffic
03:10 Arriving and departing trains seen just ouside the tunnel, north of the platforms. Here suburban trains reach ground level again via a gradient with several tracks.
06:20 Suburban trains of line S 31 to and from Dammtor on the bridge crossing the long distance tracks. Between Altona and Holstenstraße suburban trains use the track on the left hand side. This is unusual in Germany. In the underground station, trains from Blankenese or Pinneberg arrive on the track situated most to the West. Passengers can change to the S 31 train just on the other side of the platform. This train, however, is going to leave Altona in the opposite direction - so it will go on the left track until Holstenstraße.
07:09 More scenes from the underground station, trains arriving from or leaving for Hamburg Central Station or through the tunnel opening
