@JMMakeupPhotographer Depends what do you mean by "Never cross my sticks?" Do you mean your inner mallets during runs or when using Stephens grip, because in Stephens they don't cross, but in Burton and traditional they do. Also, sticks cross in runs as well. Unless your instructor is a percussionist, don't listen to him (unless he is saying don't cross your mallets in your hands when using Stephens, because he is right about that). Size of hands isn't something that should matter, ever.

Having a different mallet can help with the sounds of the lower or higher bars. Fat mallets make the bottom notes sound smoother. If you tried using a fat mallet on the high side then there would practically be no sound. The higher side needs a harder mallet to be heard. If you tried a harder mallet on the bottom then it would sound clunky.

@904Andrew I don't agree with the idea of switching grips... but i agree with the harsh sounding comment and such... I must ask though... which "other grip" are you refering to? There's more than just two types of four mallet grips...... lol

@904Andrew I think there are no exact answers in music. If you like to play soft, you could softly, if you want more aggression, why not? you could play more aggression. I could only use Burton Grip, because my hands are soo small it'll be diffcult to use Stevens Grip. Burton Grip could play soft. Thank you for advise

@MsMusicians1 Play slowly. If you think your two hands are comfortable to play, then play more fast. 'Playing slowly' makes everybody boring, but it's good way to practice! Good luck!

Actually the begging is supposed to sound more aggressive, hence the name "rain dance" Has to do something to do with ancient Indians dancing for rain. I'm playing this solo for school, and the 6/8 time should be the "relaxing part".

@PercussionGeek1 @PercussionGeek1 I know the outer mallet should be rolling on a D note, but i had only 1week to practice for porformance and had problem. Therefore, teacher told me to play only inner right mallet for safety performance. After this performance i had full time to practice and know i could play with outer mallet at around 4:26. Don't have to worry. Thank you for advise.

Overall it was a very good performance. Starting at around 4:26 though, the outer right mallets should be rolling on a D the whole time while the inner right mallet moves. Great arrangement between the guitar, drumset and flute.

@yoonjaekyung I'm confused as to how that relates to what I said.... but... in fact, my teacher actually prefers traditional grip. He lets us keep what ever technique we like best when we come into college though. I liked Stevens best, so he let me keep that as my main technique.. but.. I mean, we have to learn all of them... there are times when different techniques are better for different pieces..... the fact that an instructor would "kill" someone for using a different technique is absurd.

@ZackGoldberdDrums I think there are no exact answers in music. If you feel like this "rain dance" Indians dancing, you may play like that. It's up to you. Hope you have great performance at school Thank you for advise.

Obviously this piece is not playable in a flute. You would have to adapt it, and it would be crap (unless you play with many people)

Unless you mean the flute that sounds at the back... That's only a complimentary arrangement they've made for the band to play.
