Back when Tom was still being typecast as a pretty-boy brat but was also starting to demonstrate his range as an actor, that he was more than just a pretty face. Same with Born on the Fourth of July. Then there was that string of amazing mid-budget dramas in the 90's.

Dustin was phenomenal and deserved his Oscar for Best Actor but Tom Cruise really was robbed that year. He definitely deserved a nomination at the very least. He was without a doubt, totally robbed for 1989s: "Born on the Fouth of July". He should have won best Actor for sure on that one. It is THE BEST performance of his ENTIRE career. That's saying a lot but it is so very true. I highly recommend it. You won't believe it's the same guy.

It wasn't 1988 but 1991, so only 3 years later. I had a Turbo Grafx 16 portable. Basically like a super Gameboy. It was in color like the Sega Game Gear but it played the same games as the Turbo Grafx console you hooked up to your TV. There was a TV tuner accessory for it that I had that turned it into a TV. Got pretty good reception too for what it was. I went everywhere with that thing. There were actually a few tornado watches and warnings when our power went out that it kept us informed.

I'm mixed on this one. On the one hand, I've heard complaints about the portrayal of autism in this. On the other hand, as you said, we didn't know anything at all about autism when this came out. Even if it was a little off, mixing in savant-like behaviors, it still tried to be a sensitive portrayal. All that aside, though, it's a great film with great performances. I like that it was a feature film, with big stars, that walked the indie line with an ambiguous ending.

Dustin's portrayal is actually based on a real person named Kim Peek. There's a few documentaries of Peek you can find on KZitem.

@@thegorn68 Yeah, I saw the short docu-segment on him. He's unusual, though, in that most autistic people are not also savants. The complaint, after this movie got popular, was upon meeting someone autistic people expected them to be great at math or have perfect memory or whatever. That just isn't that common.

"What you have to understand is, four days ago he was only my brother in name. And this morning we had pancakes." This is a great family movie about brothers, a rare subject matter for Hollywood. As much as I detest how they treat General Custer, I think Dustin Hoffman's performance in Little Big Man (1970) is his absolute best. If I wasn't a student of history, I'd buy that movie's revisionist agitprop. I still recommend that movie thoroughly. Fun Fact: The highest-grossing movie of 1988. Music Enthusiast Fact: Hans Zimmer's first score for a Hollywood production. Family Affair Fact: Jake Hoffman, the boy at the pancake counter, is Dustin Hoffman's son. The script was originally written with real-life brothers Randy and Dennis Quaid in mind. Best Ending Fact: Dustin Hoffman fought for the ending where Raymond goes back to Wallbrook, even though the screenwriters both wanted him to end up with Charlie (Tom Cruise). Hoffman thought it wouldn't be true to Raymond's character if they had him stay. Historical Fact: What Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman) says about Qantas was, and still is true. From 1921 to now, Qantas has never lost any jet airliners. For in-flight viewing, several airlines deleted the sequence in which Raymond Babbitt reels off statistics on airline accidents, except Qantas. They even promoted one of the movie's writers to first class once when he travelled on their airline. What Script Fact: The elderly man in the waiting room who talks on and on about the Pony Express is Byron P. Cavnar, an 89-year-old local who was in the waiting room when the crew arrived to film there. He got to talking on his favorite subject, the Pony Express, and director Barry Levinson got such a kick out of it that he let Cavnar keep on talking as the cameras rolled. All his dialogue was spontaneous and not scripted.

Counting cards is not illegal---but Vegas is a company town, and the casinos own it. Thus, the laws are such that a casino can toss you out for ANY reason, i.e., if they merely think you’re cheating, you’re out, and that’s it. Regardless of your skills, the odds remain, as always, with the house. The casinos also work together and share information on people, so you could wind up banned from all casinos eventually.
@jowbloe3673
Ай бұрын
The whole point of counting cards is to change the odds from favoring the house to favoring the player. That's why Raymond bet either one or two chips to let Charlie know when the odds had swung to the player's advantage.
@Jeff_Lichtman
Ай бұрын
The fart in the phone booth was unscripted. Dustin Hoffman actually did fart, and he and Tom Cruise just went with it. Director Barry Levinson decided to keep it in the movie. Counting cards is not illegal per se. The casinos don't like it, though, and if they think you've been doing it they'll tell you to leave and not come back. If you return, it's trespassing, and you can be arrested for that. Not only that, but they'll tell all the other casinos as well. You hit on something when you asked "Who looks like the one who's not quite with it?" Charlie was a damaged person because of his bad relationship with his father. At the beginning of the movie he was selfish, cold, and lacked empathy. By the end of the story he was on his way to being able to have normal relationships.
