I love that movie, The Shawshank Redemption. I haven't seen it in quite a few years but just hearing you guys talk about it makes me want to watch it again. Shawn is lucky to have you guys as friends. I find his video's, story telling and ability to cook so many foods in ways I've never tried, awesome! I just realized this video is from Ted and not Shawn. Maybe I should say something nice about Ted and his brother but I think all of you guys are just as awesome. God Bless All of you for showing how friendship is meant to be. No Gangs or using of foul language, keeping it family friendly. God Bless you guys! If there is anything I can ever do for any of you just ask, within reason of course. I'm not a rich man but like you guys I would give you the shirt off my back.

Hey Ted! I'm working my way through all the different takes on this amazing project. I love that 4 individual and characterful males can find a way to work in a team, mirrored in your dogs. Your style of photography is very enjoyable to watch as it's a strong mix of Ted's Individual Experience, a walkabout (like a fly on the camera) for me, and a beautiful wild-life watch, without disturbing them 'at home'. And what a variety of amazing creatures! I was thinking, do you ever incorporate the Indian mind-set with regard to the animals when you are out in the wild? I have called your brother, Jim, 'Bear-watcher' and 'Bear-scarer' before, for he is like a great bear. You are more like the heron - tall, watchful and careful. You described Doug as a 'red squirrel'. I'm not sure what animal Shawn would be - what do you think? Maybe a bee because his 'hive' is designed to be a collective project. The Indians see each creature as a spirit messenger. In particular, the salamanders, which had found a perfect home for themselves in between all the bark panels. The salamander is often seen as a good-luck symbol, especially for the hearth and home, and is in a lot of art-work. It's like they were blessing the bark panels for the longhouse. Spiders are called 'grandmother spider' because of their weaving and the web of life, and I wonder if the all your women will weave a role in this project. The heron, of course, is the Fisher, and the bees are symbols of fertility and collective consciousness, working together for a common benefit. It's hard to see the benefits of the disease-spreading mosquito until we see how we use the 'needle' for inoculation and control of disease. Thank you for your contribution, I look forward to the next episode.

Yes, of course, without each other, we would not long thrive. We might survive, but as the old saying goes, it takes a village to ... and then fill in your own blanks. There are reasons human beings grouped together in family groups, and then in small villages, towns, and then cities. We need each other. And if push comes to shove, we need help in defeating the bad guys who want to take what is ours. That applies on ALL levels of life. Many battles, we just cannot fight alone.

The Neolithic longhouse was a long, narrow timber dwelling built by the first farmers in North Central Europe beginning at least as early as the period 5000 to 6000 B.C. This type of architecture represents the largest free-standing structure in the world in its era. It is thought that these Neolithic houses had no windows and only one doorway. The end farthest from the door appears to have been used for grain storage, with working activities being carried out in the better lit door end and the middle used for sleeping and eating. Structurally, the Neolithic long house was supported by rows of large timbers holding up a pitched roof. The walls would not have supported much weight and would have been quite short beneath the large roof. Sill beams ran in foundation trenches along the sides to support the low walls. The long houses would measure around 20 meters in length and 7 meters in width and could have housed twenty or thirty people.The Balbridie timber house in what is present day Aberdeenshire, Scotland offers an outstanding example of these early structures. This was a rectangular structure with rounded ends, measuring 24 meters x 12 meters, it was originally thought to be post-Roman, but radiocarbon dating of charred cereal grains established dates from 3900-3500 B.C., falling into the early Neolithic. Archaeological excavations have revealed extant timber postholes that delineate the support pieces of the original structure. This site is strategically located in a fertile agricultural area along the River Dee very close to an ancient strategic ford of the river and also near an ancient timber trackway known as the Elsick Mounth. Bye from NE Italy (on the border with Slovenija and Austria)

Esse vídeo ficou muito legal. Os amigos colaborando no recobrimento do teto dessa cabana. O compartilhar de um churrasco e os cachorros amistosos entre si. A natureza ganha o cenário.

@TheRealTedBaird

Hey Janey. Thanks. The winds are a concern for sure but we are hoping because it is in the thick forest the surrounding trees will help a lot to break the winds and protect the roof. Having said that we dont know how well it will hold up to the elements. we have not done it before and I suppose we are learning a lot as we go. Hopefully it lasts a long time. WOULD THE LOGS YOU NEED TO PEEL FOR LONG HOUUSE ,,PEEL IF LEFT IN OR SUBMERGED IN WAATER ,,MAYBE HALF OF THE BARK ? MY KNOWLEDGE OF TREES IS THE. SAP RUNS DOWN IN FALL ,FROM LEAVES TO ROOTS ,,AND UP IN SPRING FROM ROOTS TO THE LEAVES ,, I USED TO KNOW MANY ,MANY NORTHERN TREES AND IDENTIFY THEM YEAR ROUND
@TheRealTedBaird
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg, that may work but we wouldn't physically be able to move the heavy logs to a water source to soak them. In the spring there are swampy pools near where we sourced the trees but they have since dryed up. You are correct in that I think the sap will be running back to the roots now and that we will have to wait for spring to source the remaining bark or risk it not being useable and damaging it for no reason. Hopefully with the ash trees dieing they will still leaf out come spring adlnd we will be able to get the bark. In the mean time we will build our bunks and work on the interior. Thanks for your thoughts appreciate the input. Have a great weekend Greg. Take care and hope see you next time

This so interesting....Bark, Does it have to be cured in any way ..? (Future)
@TheRealTedBaird
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Thank you. No the bark doesn't have to be cured. We let it sit but we should have put it straight on the structure after removing it from the trees then secured it so when it dries it dries in place. we had let it sit flat and it was ok still but it was risky because it could have been rotted or damaged. Luckily we were still able to use it. Time will tell how it holds up. Thank you for watching. Hope to see you again

He has helped inspire many and shown the beauty of escaping modern society, returning back to our routes and becoming self reliant. In this vid While visiting Shawn's I take the time to explore his off grid cabin his sauna forest kitchen and and very am impressed with his craftsmanship and attention to detail.
