Thank you, this is our solution. I've known of rain roofs but now I've seen yours and how easy it is to build I'm sold. I live in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia, with an avg rainfall of 250mm if we're lucky, some years less. I have no bore, it was too salty anyway and I have 20 horses and lots of chickens and lots of kangaroos. So your roof is a blessing. Just ran out of rainwater for the horses........ You have excellent engineering skills. It seems like everything you build is solid and will last for a very long time. But the most impressive part of this video was the end clips of the wildlife having a drink at their new found watering hole. That is just so cool to watch. You have built an oasis in the desert. Now... If you had the need you would have a great chance at harvesting a deer to feed your family. :-I
@homesteadonomics
5 жыл бұрын
Dean O. Thank you! And yes, the thought of potential food is a plus too! But the hunting I do is away from the house as I would feel bad to harvest an animal while taking a drink. I prefer spot and stalk😀👍
@deano.7533
5 жыл бұрын
@@homesteadonomics --- I was talking more along the lines of if you had a pressing need. The extra wildlife that is around your property could really help you in a pinch. Under some kind of emergency conditions where you didn't want to go too far away from your property and you needed the food. I wouldn't want to just harvest an animal at the water source either. My point was that in a pinch you actually wouldn't have to venture too far away from the homestead and you'd still have a really good chance of spotting and getting a shot at some solid organic protein. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I
@homesteadonomics
5 жыл бұрын
Dean O. Absolutely, I know what you mean and it definitely a thought that has crossed my mind multiple times. Especially in an emergency, I wouldn’t hesitate to get it where I found it and the water hole would definite be spot #1 to go first 😉 And no worries, I was just clarifying in that first response because I didn’t want someone to read it and think that was the primary reason of building it. But just know that I’m totally with you on the thoughts of potential food😀👍

Tub is a great idea. If the flow ever surpasses the current 1” pipe, you could just add an additional 1” run beside it and still be cheaper than big pipe.
@homesteadonomics

TheKallipugos yes, for sure! 👍😀
@Noah_E
5 жыл бұрын
That's always an option, but the nice thing about 2" pipe is under a gravity system it should be able to carry 55 GPM. 1" pipe can only carry 16 GPM so two of them would still be less than 60% the capacity of a 2" pipe. That might not matter if it doesn't rain much where you are, but it does in my part of VA.

Just a suggestion from my experience of re-using grey water - put a partial baffle across the collection basin, perpendicular to the flow of the water. This will force the water to slow down and drop the sand and bird poo that gets washed off the roof panels.

this is great and a great movie theater/salvage story. One suggestion, you could find or commission a nice wide/sloped sided ceramic bowl that, if commissioned by a local ceramicist, could have some sand or texture on the glaze inside so its is easily gripped by little animals that might others drown, and you dont have to rely on the stick not blowing away or getting moved. Alternatively you could stack some rocks in the bowl. Anyway, jealous. Good job enjoy!

The De Anza started out as the Cactus Drive In in 1951, and it closed in '76. New owners installed 2 more screens and opened it again in '77, under the name of De Anza. The De Anza was closed in 2009. There was a bowling alley across the street named Cactus Bowl, sharing the original name of the drive in. It lasted longer than both iterations of the theater, it closed up in 2013. The bowling alley has an interesting story of it's own, being that it originally had 60 lanes, and hosted professional tournaments.

For those in areas like Arizona that the rain is over fast you can include a IBC tote at the collection area by building a higher roof or building a retaining wall for the tote to sit down in a hole to collect the most water without expensive large pipes/gutters then run a cheap poly irrigation pipe between the tote and the storage tanks as you will have time before the next rain for the tank to transfer over. It would also require a different transfer setup as you would want a float switch to stop the flow in the storage tanks when full. Less important on this project as it is just a side project and not a primary water source where lack of water at the end of a season means needing to ship in water if the rain is far enough off. Would be more important for garden and house water to capture more without the extra costs of the larger 2-6 inch pipes to transfer as it falls.

Very cool, you may want to bend the end of your gutter down to create a drip edge. That will prevent any water from running back underneath.
@homesteadonomics

Smurphenstein yes that would help a bit on thr outlet side. But most of those drips are where the sections meet. I have a couple screws to let it pivot up and down. The section that touches the screened inlet of the tub is about 6” or so. So it won’t ever seal completely. But it might help a bit. Thanks!

Great video as usual. It is great that you take the time and effort to care for wildlife and the fact that the majority of this project was reuse is outstanding. Do you think the new water collection area will draw in more wildlife due to the large expanse of new shade that you are providing or will it just bake under that roofing. Deer, coyotes, bobcats and rabbits... terrific. Thanks for sharing and the great thing about ‘staches is that you can always grow them or remove them as your thoughts change!
