I think the Pinkie sugar addiction could also be relevant to going on a "health food" diet or cutting out junk food. The moderation lesson works better when it's referring to "sometimes foods", like actual sugary treats, rather than casually getting back into using a substance that you previously lost control over. It makes it easier to appeal to kids, as well, telling them it's not good to eat candy or sweets all the time.

@gatorgoatjohnny As a smoker, the regulations (in the UK) need to be way stricter. Even so, I know of multiple kids who have started, (some being my friends when they were underage) but I've not heard of them starting because of the packaging, it was usually peer pressure, trying it for fun and it actually relieving stress (causing the addiction), or starting with cigarettes in the first place which are extremely regulated. I think the packaging is definitely insane with its colorful sugary blah blah advertising, I think it should be packahed similar to cigarettes in the UK (no advertising brands, just the name and warning of affects of smoking)

Kicking the habit is hard even when you only binge drink once in a week, yet I had my reason. I found my inner true self not too long ago, it turns out that my personality is a girl's and accepting that sure feels like being reborn. It wasn’t a substance addiction, but, I was addicted to something. A video game, more specifically. PvP, very toxic. I kept going back because I enjoyed the adreneline rush. I was also surrounded by people encouraging my bad behavior, but the second it got too much they dropped me like a hat, leaving me alone to fix my sh*t. I was a bad, back then-mental health issues like unmedicated depression. I took it out on others in that game, and I was neglecting my own needs to do it. I remember the day I realized something needed to change. I woke up so sluggish, and couldn’t wake up fully-it felt like someone was pulling my eyelids down. I ended up drinking six cups of cold brew without anyone knowing-and after a little bit, I blacked out. According to my mom and sister, I had confused my mom for our dog and was acting completely out of it. I wasn’t responsive and it was freaking them out. Then, I dropped, and had a seizure. I woke up in the hospital with no recollection and I merely asked my mom “ Am I dying? “ I wasn’t (luckily), but it did spark something in me. Change. I needed to change. I’ve quit that game, and my mental health has improved substantially. It’s been maybe three years at this point and I’m surrounded by a new supportive group who understands. The game was a gacha game, basically gambling for kids. And as I said, it was stupid toxic. 2013 CoD toxic. I’m glad I’m gone. This happened when I was 15, and I’m 18 now.

After experiencing a bunch of hardships in my late late teens and switching to DXM usage to cope and then alcohol when i turned 21 (been trying to cut down for a while), I can understand a pony like RD would probably turn to cider to cope with a lot of stuff going on in her life. For adding in instead of baking, I would recommend buying bulk Erithrytol sweetener. It has an "aftertaste" that makes the food taste colder, because Erithrytol is still technically a sugar alcohol. But it doesn't have the sweet bitter aftertaste so I love using it for cooking. Although it DOES work in baking without messing up the structure, it can be weird eating a hot chocolate chip cookie that tastes cold. I'm the same exact way cus my sweet taste buds have been destroyed by Suboxone

The biggest option is pasteurization. Im assuming ponies dont do that a lot. More so for crushed apples, cider. So it might not start out intentionally alchohol, it might end up as such. And Dash being at cloudsdale growing up means it might take "time" for any imports. Giving some chance of most being fermented. Perhaps leading to Dash having a taste for the feeling that cider gave.

So interesting I just happen to stumble upon this video today, I'm currently starting my own journey to recovering from my battle with alcohol and I've NEVER had a video on the topic show up in my feed before EVER, let alone one about MLP, didn't even know about the meme. In any case, great video! Very entertaining and informative, appreciate you didn't go on random Game Theory tangents and just stuck to the more interesting topics!

I'll say this *once.* The cider the Apples produce is literally apple juice. It's cider by the American (ie, correct) definition, being nonalcoholic fruit juice, not the European alcoholic definition. It is not a stand-in for beer, or moonshine, or whatever - those already exist in Equestria. It is *freshly/recently-pressed juice from apples.* And all of you should know that, after that episode with that cider-pressing machine of Flim and Flam's. Dash. Is not. A drunk.
@gatorgoatjohnny

I agree with you that Dash probably doesn't have a cider dependency, but I think there's a decent argument to be made that cider is at least partially beer-coded. I also made it clear that I don't really care whether the cider is alcoholic, and that this is a psychological examination more than anything.

"American (ie, correct) definition" Huh? Why is the American definition (which only exists as a side effect of prohibition, where hard cider was made illegal and cider became non-alcoholic by default - previously, non-alcoholic cider was the exception) the "correct" one? Soft cider and hard cider both meet definition of cider. Neither is objectively more correct than the other, but outside of the USA, "cider" almost always means "hard cider".

I have found myself repeatedly addicted and unaddicted to many substances, I consider it sort of a rite of passage. But I have a lot of friends that get heavily addicted to substances and I do not know what to do for them. They seem to be obsessed with chasing the next high, or doing whatever they need to do to get the next thing, but... I never really felt that way. My only addiction was to "I do not not want to be me" like an anti-addiction. My 'addictions" I could take them or leave them... as long as I don't have to be me. I am addicted to not being me, I guess in a way, escapism. I have trouble understanding this psychological need for a substance because, simply, I know I can take it or leave it. But to have to be sober and be ME? oh, heck no. No, not even once. I flee from that like the plague. I think that maybe addiction has that element that gets understated a lot, it's not about chasing something always-- it can be about running away from something. It does depend on the person but it's important to know that not everyone is chasing something but that many are running away from something.

As I know you don't often cover the comics, I'd like to inform you that Sugar-Free Pie may or may not have been repurposed and changed up for Friendship is Magic #63: All in Marederation. Same basic premise: There's a sugar prohibition, and Pinkie's sugar addiction is one of the many victims of the banning. Pinkie's personality changes drastically as a result of her going cold turkey, until she is turned around back to her old self and gives us a lesson in moderation. And same concept of sugar as an allegory for substance abuse. But that's where the similarities end. Here, the conflict is caused by an active antagonist pony who sees sugar as evil, rather than the ban being caused by the long left behind Parasprites, and Pinkie is forced into going cold turkey by said antagonist, rather than coming to the conclusion on her own. We eventually learn that Pinkie balances out her sugar diet with plenty of relatively healthy eating, as much as we never see her do that on-screen or in the comic itself. And on a side note, Friends Forever #12 established that Pinkie has hypermetabolism, which allows her to process, digest, and not suffer too much from all that sugar intake, ala Wakko Warner. So it's not like sugar is as much of a problem for Pinkie as it would be for me. And more notably, All in Marederation makes the allegory for substance abuse much more blatant. I'm talking about Applejack running a bar that sells sugar, with other ponies binge-eating sugary and fattening desserts like they're binge-drinking alcohol, and it's all tied up with one particular panel: Rainbow Dash talking with crooked tooth and bloodshot eyes, with a milkshake in her hoof. It's kind of like the first Goofy Goober scene in the first SpongeBob movie, just without going the step of having ponies get blackout drunk.

Also a nice reference as the pony who wants to ban sugar is referred to as "Granny Temperance"

@@gatorgoatjohnny Funny thing is, some comic adaptations of shows tackle plotlines that were scrapped from the show. It's not just MLP. The Powerpuff Girls is more well known for its Powerpunk Girls comic, which was an episode planned for Season 4 that was scrapped because of the movie coming out.

this hit me way too hard. I’m 19, I’ve been smoking since i was about 13? and it’s something that has affected me everyday since. it’s effected my health at this point, to the extent i might be developing a lung condition but I don’t think I’d be genuinely safe without it because of my other struggles with mental health. recently I’ve also developed an alcohol dependency just to feel sociable and ease my anxieties about feeling like the odd one out so watching this at this point in my life is hard but also cathartic.

@@gatorgoatjohnny you totally get it. when i first started smoking it was a way to calm myself down and ground myself but now i genuinely CAN’T ground myself fully without it which kinda defeats the purpose of why i started in the first place. it’s not like i really wanna live like this anymore, but even just taking a tolerance break never is as easy as they make it out to be (but i’m sure you have experienced similar things and know that all too well). thank you for being so supportive and motivating regardless, videos like these always make me reflect on my actions but not necessarily in a existential evangelion way but in a ‘what can i do to change for the better?’ way

I vape, and while I feel like it's definitely an improvement from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, I don't like that a significant portion of my income literally becomes vapor.
