You are the Dad I never had. I called the mechanics in the family and they encouraged me to buy a new vacuum. My father (he was a very good man, he just didn’t have the time to rebuild vacuums because of his work, however he bought this vacuum for me forever ago - grateful). Thank you so much for this video. My rainbow vacuum’s engine was making a terrible, horrible, screeching noise. I’m going with your diagnosis. I stopped the tear down (mine), to write and thank you for your invaluable help and video. Thanks for making such a clear, get to the point, video. So grateful.

When I took my D4 to the local dealer, where they have helped me before, they simply told me the vacuum was obsolete. They used to do repairs, their repair guy got sick and never came back. One issue with commutators, they can get out of round and the brushes end up vibrating and arcing more than they should. The only solution is to put the armature on a lathe and take as little off as possible from the commutator. The next problem is there have to be gouges between the commutator segments. I used a carbide insert to do my work, should have used HHS instead. Now I have to go in and clean out the gouges between segments. I was taught to seat the brushes, so they have the same contour as the commutator, take a piece of 600 grit sand paper, slip it between the brush and the commutator, and rotate the shaft back and forth. Eventually the brush will have the same curvature as the commutator, do this for both. I may have to buy a new armature, having a problem cleaning up the segments. I know on larger motors, we would take a hacksaw blade, grind it so it's narrow and use it to clean out the gouges. Thanks for the videos, I think Rainbows are great vacuums, but the local dealers don't help much. Jim

Hi VacLab. Thank you so much for this great video. I have 3 (!) D4s, and one badly needs a bearing job. A local repair place told me it was not possible! And Rexair doesn’t appear to offer much support to the do it yourselfer. I will write again after my D4 spins like new, and thank you again!

I remember when we worked on my 1997 D4C SE, these older Rainbows are a pain compared to newer E series units. Down the Rabbit Holes you go with your D series Rainbows.
@robdentremont1436

But they are still worth a bearing job if needed, right? Compared to discarding it and buying an E series? I have 3 D4s but now you have made me want an E!

How about parting one out? I need a new disc. The bottom alum. impeller on mine is chewed up around the center hole. Won't stay compressed when I turn it on and it won't suck. (had to do a bearing replacement also)

What's the white stone looking thing you "cleaned the armature" with?? Also: What does the black split ring do under the motor shaft? Couldn't get mine off but see you didn't anyway? My vac had a bad lower bearing. Totally rusted and wore out and missing balls even. Lower housing wouldn't slide off. Had to pound the shaft back in/up with a hammer. Mushroomed the end of the shaft but will grind it back to where I hope to be able to get the lock nut back on. Had to watch video several times (at 3.00 and later at 4.48) where my problem areas were, because of the fast forward mode. (didn't need that in a critical area of disassembly)

The armature is cleaned with a "seating/polishing stone". And I only remove components that need to be removed to perform the service. You can watch the video in "real" time by selecting 0.25x mode in your browser or KZitem app.

@@VacLab Morning Vaclab. After having to pound the shaft from the bottom to get the base unit apart I noticed the motor is not in the same place. The shaft pounded up through it and now it's lower on the shaft. Can I get a measurement from the top of the threads down so I know where to tap it back into correct place?

So I just got my grandma's D4C rainbow to fix for her. She says that it will come on but after about 15 min it will shut off almost like its running hot. Do you have any suggestions as to what it might be? Rainbow dealer told her it would just be better to buy a new one.

Right. Goodvac.com says, "Hold the brush seater on the commutator close to the brush so the brush seater material will be carried under the brush." As I have never done this before, I was hoping to see it done first.

If they are still usable and you can back them out, do so. If rusted and there's no phillips head left, either try with pliers or they will need to be drilled and then use a screw extractor bit to back them out. Not much else you can do.

The exhaust cap does not have a filter element as its meant to block off rear exhaust air from that port.
