Cozy Powell was the drummer on this, he was already famous before joining Rainbow. He was the rare beast of a drummer that had a No 1 hit with a song that was almost entirely drums (Dance with the Devil). There is a very good documentary about him, apparently he was notorious for throwing a drum stick at guitarists that made mistakes, he was also a prankster. I got to see Cozy with Whitesnake and The Brian May band, he also did some really good stuff with Michael Schenker. There is a huge Rainbow rabbit hole to explore, this was the band that got me into Rock and Metal. My favourite track is Eyes of the world off the Down to earth album (My favourite Rainbow Album). Oh and Yes Ritchie Blackmore is famous for being responsible for more classic guitar riffs than just about anybody, only Jimmy Page and Tony Iomi can compete.

Did you know that Cozy Powell died in a car accident when a tire on his car blew out and he lost control? He was actually on the phone with Tony Iommi at the time. You probably already knew that Cozy Powell did play for Sabbath at one point back in the 90's.

@@josephbarr1659 Yes, I was a lorry driver back then and had past the spot near Bristol where it happened 30 mins before, one of my colleagues was stuck in the traffic jam and phoned me straight away. @@ratowey OOPS. I need to make a correction here. Did some very quick research on Cozy's death. Apparently he was NOT on the phone with Tony Iommi when the tire on his Saab blew. It was his girlfriend. MY APOLOGY for that as I do NOT want to be responsible for spreading false information. I had seen an interview with Tony where he talked about Cozy's tragic death, and I probably just misunderstood him at the time. Tony probably said, "He was on the phone at the time...and his last words were 'Oh shit!'..." and I mistakenly made the erroneous connection that it was Iommi himself on the other end. I think maybe sometimes your mind makes you hear or understand things that you want to believe because it would make a good story. Idk. Of course I am getting old, so there's that too. 😂

Love Rainbow, Deep Purple, Dio. Got to see the Holy Diver tour, 3 row in a small venue at "The Arlington" in Santa Barbara 1984. It was over the top amazing. Dio and Iron Maidan toured together a lot, I've seen that show at least 3 times. I feel super grateful to have grown up listening and seeing all of this great music, being a teenager in the 1970-1980's in SoCal and marrying a music man myself. So much talent everywhere at that time! You have barley touched the tip of this iceberg, so many bands.... Rainbow had many great singers and music. Star Struck Dio always makes me laugh. Listen to Stone Cold with Ronnie Romero. Totally different! Couple other bands to check out Triumph and UFO, Michael Schenker on Guitar, who's brother is Rudolf Schenker Guitar player from the Scorpions. They all know each other.. Rock n Roll is like one big extended family. :)

I don't agree with that assessment. Glenn Hughes was in Trapeze before Deep Purple, David Coverdale was making a name for himself, Ian Gillan was the original Jesus in Jesus Christian Superstar, Dio was in Elf and Cozy Powell was in the Jeff Beck group. All of these guys were already enoying some degree of fame and recognition. Now if you said Ritchie Blackmore exposed them to a wider audience that would be accurate.

@@neillenet291 but truly and real fame they get after they met Ritchie. Yes, Huges was in Ttapeze before Ritchie, but it was unknown band. Also Gillan was in Jesus when he was in DP already. Right, That's why I said they all had "some degree of fame" before they played with Ritchie Blackmore. You could also say Ritchie wouldn't have made it as big without Ian Gillan because deep purple didn't break huge wasn't until Ian Gillan joined the band as their singer

Thier projects were infamous and amateur. It is not enough to be just good vocalist you also should be a good composer and creator. For example creation of Ian Gillans band when he was making his own career we all know, right?! It is nothing to compare it with DP era. The same with others. Hey, hey, hey now. You know I love you and your channel, but please do not disparage the great Tony Iommi. You have barely scratched the surface of Dio-era Black Sabbath. When you get there, you will see that Tony and Dio worked amazingly together and Dio inspired some of Tony’s greatest riffs and solos. I’m not going to come out and say who is better between Blackmore and Tony Iommi because that’s largely a matter of opinion. But check out songs like “Die Young”, “Wishing Well”, “Lonely is the Word”, “Country Girl”, “Falling Off the Edge of the World”, “Over and Over”, and some of the tracks from 1992’s Dehumanizer album such as “Computer God”, “Letters from Earth”, “Master of Insanity”, “Sins of the Father”, “I” and even “Too Late”.

Allow me to share a little story about Ritchie Blackmore and Deep Purple. In 1970, while touring Europe on a bus, a reporter was on board with DP. He asked the question, "how do you write your songs?" Without saying a word, Ritchie picks up an acoustic guitar and starts strumming a G chord over and over. Ian Gillan began to improvise lyrics over the top of Ritchie. They arrive at the venue and perfect the song during sound check. They performed the song live that night. That song was Highway Star. That's real musical talent and Deep Purple epitomised that.
