You are SO right about the chickens! THE GATEWAY farm animal! I ordered 100 on my 1st experience. I was only set up for 12. WHAT was I thinking? I have NO idea. I remember thinking to myself after they started G R O W I N G that I had made a HUGE mistake. So I called up my friends who farmed & gave most away. Then I had a friend show me how to butcher a chicken & we did about 5 or 6... Oh, dear! He threw the heads out to the bird dogs when I went into the house to get more hot water. So then we had dogs that LOVED the taste of chickens & since they watched the whole show they knew exactly where those heads came from. Well, we kept the remaining egg layers safely away from the dogs, but boy we sure had a LOT to learn. I wish I’d had your videos (and the rest of my favs) in those days. Haha! Thanks for all your videos! I really appreciate them! Love your family!

This video was a good pep talk about chickens but I would also like to see a summary video of the things you found that worked the best and the problems you had. For example I know the chicken tractor didn't work for you but the movable wire hoop did. The different breeds you tried and why they failed for you. I love the way MC knows the breeds, holds them showing no fear and the cute names she gave them. Thanks always for your videos.

Cog Hill Farm -Jason Smith first time chicken keeper but I have been researching chickens for three years! I understand the conservation effort with heirloom seeds and seed saving, so I’m just applying it to my livestock also. Wish me luck, I want to free range but we live at the edge of the forest with sooo many hawks. Just have to consider every angle, must do right by them.

Things that they should not eat are potatoes(poisonous), avocado(poisonous), raw or dry beans(some are poisonous to chickens), onions(bc your eggs could taste like onions), citrus(bc it could cause your hens to stop laying), & chocolate...I would google it to make sure there are not any others, but those are the ones off the top of my head. Thanks & great question, Jason

Hi Jason so I bought me 4 chickens to fill my coop I’ve been watching you on ur videos and decided to get chickens again and the first day one of them started laying eggs but the others haven’t and was does it take time or should they all lay right away or does it take a few weeks ? Thks sincerely mike keep up the good work
@CogHillFarm
6 жыл бұрын
A lot of times they will get stressed bc of moving to a new home & it may take a week or 2, & also it is the end of their laying cycle. As the days get shorter & shorter, the less eggs they are going to lay....so you have that going on right now as well. So it prob will not be until Spring before they start really laying good. Thanks! :) Jason

@ Cog Hill Family: With so many chickens, not to mention ducks, geese and other kinds of fowl you have, how do you know that all of them are accounted for and come back in the coop at the end of the day before you close the gate and go home yourself?

CHICKENS 101 AWESOME! And the diversity in chicken breeds,....there are so many you think you've seen and know them all and you're completely WRONG! Growing up in se Utah, I first came to know of barred plymouth rocks and rhode island reds, then on vacation at Grandma's I was introduced to Turkens, White plymouth rocks and black(they have a french sounding name) and then coming on here on KZitem breeds I didn't even now existed! Uprated and don't forget ducks, muscovies and pekings are just as COOL as the chickens! :)
