The water to the house was only frozen until mid-morning. So the rabbits did get access to unfrozen water twice today. I am not by any means saying that rabbits can or will survive all winter with only frozen water. Rabbits still need fresh water. What I am trying to point out, is that in an emergency rabbits can and will survive by licking ice for a short period of time. Water helps with maintaining body temperature. When raising rabbits, you will notice that their water intake increases during cold weather. More so than in the summer heat. A high protein hay like alfalfa, will also help in maintaining body temperature. Around here, alfalfa is expensive and hard to find so I use Bermuda hay in the nest boxes, but I do not feed hay to the rabbits.
One thing I forgot to mention in this video, I do not stuff my cages with hay. When your cages are stuffed with hay #1 it reduces cage space, limiting your rabbits ability to move around and stay warm. #2 Rabbits will pee and poop on the hay making it unsuitable to eat. The rabbits will eat the hay (dirty or not). Dirty hay is not healthy to eat and it can irritate a rabbit's sensitive respiratory system causing pneumonia and other breathing difficulties. Also, the wet hay will mat to your cage bottoms causing the pee and poop not to drop from the cages. Once again, causing filth and respiratory problems as well as causing damage to your wire cages.
