@@StephenKershaw1 He obviously wasn't interested in a "furin" culture, so why not look at the latest Detroit iron while the more adventurous wifey does shopping, etc. I can't remember; is he at a law enforcement conference? Why on earth would someone so culturally inept travel to a country like Thailand, especially at that time? Clifton James does a masterful job as Pepper in LALD, despite the character really being out of sync with the film series, unfortunately. That's not his fault as he was generally a serious character actor. His ability to grasp the character so well and let the comedy lose is astounding. But bringing him back in an such an unlikely comic scenario shows how unimaginative both writer Tom Mankiewicz and director Guy Hamilton were. I consider both to have lowered the quality of the series with their input. That being said, when I watch this again, Christopher Lee really does play off Bond as an equal astonishingly well. And despite this being somewhat weak in the series, its still eminently more watchable than recent efforts that are confusing with action difficult to follow.

Yes, agreed. (Though actually SHERIFF PEPPER as SGT Pepper is a Beatles' composition.) Sheriff Pepper really wasn't appropriate for Bond even in the previous film, BUT that is not to say he wasn't an interesting character, and that is not to demean the brilliance of Clifton James' performance in that film. I've seen Clifton James in other roles, and Pepper is very different from the generally serious roles he often played. I fault the writer Tom Mankiewicz and director Guy Hamilton for this buffoonery that undermines a great deal of this film. I underestimated Christopher Lee's performance because there is so much idiocy in this film...from Goodnight to Pepper to the poorly written character of Nick Nack. Herve Villecheze could have been much more menacing while working with a more serious Bond director (like Terrence Young and Peter Hunt who did brilliant work). Instead, all are just comic relief in what should be a generally serious film. A laugh here and there is fine if the situation warrants it, but silliness in this undermines anything that could have been thrilling. No wonder Cubby Broccoli took his time and went to a blank sheet of paper with the next installment "The Spy Who Loved Me". The success of that film at the box office after the dwindling earning under the Hamilton-Mankiewicz collaboration pretty much indicts that duo for putting in half-hearted, uninspired efforts.

But of course Bond is there for the Solex, courtesy of Miss Anders who hopes Bond will "set her free" from Scaramanga once she passes it to him. He had already established that Scaramanga wasn't after him, so I'm not sure of these "weaknesses" in the script. Bond is visibly upset when he realises Scaramanga has killed her. Just before he retrieves the Solex (his eventual mission) he terminates Scaramanga. I imagine an extra element of the satisfaction of this is payback for Andrea's needless execution.

Obviously the character is totally unnecessary and undermines the film that overemphasizes silliness. Clifton James is a great actor and did a superb job in Live and Let Die despite being a character out of sync with the world of Bond. I can't remember if there was anything in the script, but if not, he should have been there at an international law enforcement convention. You know as well as I that Thailand would NOT be a place that someone like this would want to visit at that time, long before it became a major world tourist destination. As far as the car showroom goes, the only plausible explanation that was not given in the film but could be a good justification would be that this proud Southerner ignorant and indifferent to the local culture that his more accepting and curious wife is being immersed in decides not to going shopping in the markets or stores, and decides to check out some of the latest Detroit (actually Kenosha!) iron. Its something he can relate to (American), unlike the people whose culture he disdains. I have no idea what his racist insults mean, but the whole scene shows the lack of creativity on the parts of director Guy Hamilton and writer Tom Mankiewicz. I've seen Mankiewicz's commentary in the DVD extras, and he has an overly-inflated opinion of himself like Dr Kananga. He wrote three of the weakest films of two of the better (IMO) James Bond actors. This film had elements with the potential to be thrilling and draw one in, but the buffoonery of Goodnight, Pepper, and the misuse of Nick Nack who is depicted as a joke rather than threatening just make this very weak. Director Guy Hamilton isn't a favorite Bond director of mine with his penchant for absurdity. Even the blockbuster Goldfinger could have been better had Terrence Young helmed the director's chair.
