Daniel, I'm (almost) speechless here. This is superb work. Truly. You told a story and captured the remoteness, raw beauty of the Rakaia river valley as well as the drama and uncertainty the weather provides. One to be REALLY proud of! I'm out of the hills this winter with a cartilage issue. Now my case of 'horizontigo' is even worse after watching this! Well done again!

Cheers Jono. Feel like I'm getting a little better with each video. Still need to work on the raw footage, the phone captured stuff is okay but can definitely level up on that. Sorry to hear about the injury, I'm sure you'll bounce back soon!

Wow, this is beautiful work and a stunning part of our country. Good on you for all those wet river crossings, that must have been a struggle to keep your feet warm after the crossings! Also top marks to the 4WD vehicle that rinsed it's wheel bearings for you :)
@DanielMurrayPhotography

Cheers Guy. I don't usually have a problem keeping the feet warm provided I keep moving. My 4WD driver certainly had the skills and has done that route many times - usually it's advisable to take two vehicles on trips like this so one can tow the other out if there's a problem!

Superb Daniel. I forwarded the video link to the team from the Canterbury Mountaineering Club instrumental in the rebuild of the Lyell Hut, their feedback has been unanimously ecstatic. With Covid its taken nearly three years to reach this stage with Lyell'. Trips and outstanding images like yours illustrate its importance. Along with the Backcountry Trust, credit must go to the CMC in the 1930's, who realised the climbing and tramping potential, as well as relative closeness, of the Upper Rakaia Catchment. They sure knew how to pick a site for a hut! Thankyou. Donald Reid CMC.

Thanks so much for that fantastic feedback, Donald - I really appreciate it. Definitely a massive thanks go to CMC for this superb facility. Robin Muirson was such an amazing help during the planning phases of this trip, we'd been exchanging emails for over a year beforehand and so I got to know a little bit about the rebuild. At some point I'll pull together a blog with some more information from this trip, the video only really scratches the surface.

Always fascinating reading about what it used to be like. I remember reading the account of Julius von Haast who came here in the 1860's, and at that time both the Lyell and Ramsay glaciers were very close to joined together!

This is utterly beautiful. My husband and I have just watched this. We love to hike in the South Island but this is way beyond our expertise. Thank you for sharing a part on NZ few get to see. Do you ever feel unsafe at being alone in an Alpine environment in Winter?
@DanielMurrayPhotography
Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! There are situations where some anxiety is natural but it's very rare I feel unsafe. I do a lot of preparation and planning (including learning as much as I can about the route and expected weather conditions) and after many years doing this have a comfortable understanding of my abilities and limits. That all helps when actually out there.

Thanks so much. Yes, the new hut is superb. When I first planned this trip in 2021 the new hut had just been fully enclosed but had no fireplace etc. As it turned out a flood knocked out the access road and delayed my trip a year, so I got to experience the fully complete version.

Brilliant work. That last river crossing was starting to look a little iffy for a solo tramp, and my toes shriveled up at every POV crossing - are you keeping the water out, or are you just keeping moving until you dry out again? Not a criticism, just feedback as a viewer - at 2:17 the cut from golden hour to daylight was a little jarring, broke my immersion for a moment. I think my brain was expecting either a different vista, or a timelapse. Could do with a dissolve or black fade transition or something maybe? Other than literally that one brief moment, it was beautiful storytelling, editing, and capture. Really top shelf. Really cool to see the work behind alpine landscape stills.

Hey Daniel, thanks for the nice feedback. Re the river crossings, it's a case of the boots being continuously wet 24/7 but provided I keep moving my feet stay warm enough. That last crossing was a little interesting - it'd been on my mind much of the prior couple of days so I was thankful it was manageable. No more than thigh deep but very swift in a couple of spots. I'm constantly learning with the video making process and so do appreciate the feedback. On these trips I don't actually spend a lot of time filming - only really in key moments - in 5 days I only got around 15 mins of raw footage. I do need to be more conscious of how I link scenes for storytelling purposes. I'm not convinced an edit transition would've worked there, but maybe a different clip (if I had one) would've helped show the passage of time/light.
@nonanon666

@@DanielMurrayPhotography yeah I do landscape stills myself, followed the link here from one of the FB groups we're both in. I only recently started trying to use a combination of GoPro, Galaxy, and 5D Mk-iii to capture more video content on family outings, and the results are pretty humbling. It's a lot more to carry, fuss with, fiddle with, and think about, and the learning curve of the traditional stills exposure triangle PLUS frame rate restrictions hurts my brain. If you got that final product from 15 minutes of raw footage that's INSANELY good.

Hey John, thanks for the great feedback. I was fortunate to get dropped in via someone who has 4WDed that route many times - we got as far as Reischek Hut, which appeared to be about the limit for a 4WD. They then left and I was on my own. I was initially aiming to spend all four nights at Lyell Hut. I tried to make it there that afternoon but it didn't work out (a story for another day 🙂) so had to retrace my steps back to Reischek. Made it to Lyell the next day and spent 2 nights there. As per the video with the approaching storm I made the decision to get down valley and stayed at Evans Hut. Even without the snow that would've been a good idea as the ~33km walk out from Lyell with a heavy pack would've been horrendous.
