The life of Ralph Vaughan Williams in words, pictures and music. The music is from RVW's Viola Suite, in several different performances and arrangements.
For RVW lovers, the best and most beautiful video available anywhere, let alone on KZitem. A triumph of love for a great man and his life's work by a true devotee. I can't applaud it enough.

Great video, VW may have found is feet comparatively late for a composer, but he wrote incredible music until his dying day. So grateful for his huge contributions to British music in so many ways.

I hope you feel very pleased, as well you should, at your success in bringing to modern audiences (& thanks also to KZitem)---those who may not have known him, and to refresh the acquaintance of we who have---the life and magnificent works of RVW.

As has been expressed by many others, I too am grateful for your efforts to highlight the music of RVW. While I lack both musical talent and the skills required to invest a major portion of my life in its study, I have an abiding appreciation for its moving contributions to my having lived, going on 87 years. This bio was a pleasure for me to view and learn things about RVW I did not know. There is one thing I'd suspected all along, but until now had never had confirmed: his religious background. I am not a religious person, but count among my friends many who are devout "believers" and are affiliated with a variety of religious organizations. I have fancied myself to be the voice in Philip Larkin's reflection "Church Going". However, the hymns and anthems secreted into so many of his works are a frequent reminder of the enduring faith of so many dear people I have known through the years.

RVW has been a source of great fascination to me since I was very young. Your presentation is powerful in its simplicity and objectivity. Last year, I had the honor of singing the Sea Symphony with the Haverford-Bryn Mawr Chorale. This video recalled my feelings at the tine. RVW was such a pure spirit. You have done us all a great service by publishing this work. Thank you.

Thank you, Colin. Except for the inescapable things (Greensleeves, Lark, Tallis, and - because I am a singer - the Five Mystical Songs) I hardly knew any RVW music until two years ago, when I bought O Thou Transcendent. It was a wonderful revelation. Now I've also seen The Passion of RVW, which added to the revelation, and I just now discovered this of yours (having recently admired very much some of your other postings. In the meantime I've listened to most of the symphonies, some of them ten or more times, and I look forward to much much more. RVW was a very great man, as well as composer.

Hi Colin… I’d not seen this until just now! Beautifully done old chum! I’d visited his house in Dorking some time in the 80’s when staying at a Franciscan Retreat House nearby… Sea Symphony has been my favourite since we rehearsed it at Harrow the term he died… he was due to come up to The Hill and conduct the 600 of us in our massive Speech Room but sadly he died four days before… we wanted to perform it anyway but our doltish Music Master cancelled the performance… one if the great disappointments of my life! I’m so grateful to you for posting his works here… Bravo! And have always admired your choice of paintings… as you know quite a few if the marine artists passed through my hands whilst I was still in the art world… well I must get my head down for a bit if kip… All Best Wishes to You from a not so snowy Sweden now! TTFN take care & All Best! Michael 🙏👍🤗

Merci beaucoup Colin....

Hi Julian - Thanks for watching my video. All of the music is from the Viola Suite. This movement is called 'Carol' and it features throughout the video. There are two errors in that film but I won't say what they are in the hope that no-one notices! Do you 'do' Facebook? If so, I'd urge you to search Facebook for 'Ralph Vaughan Williams Discussion' and join my group. There are about 150 members and discussion is lively and intereresting - and very informal and not at all stuffy.
