I would love to see you do lists of the most overpriced and under-priced katana. I hear so many people either complain that a high-end sword wasn't up to expectations or that a cheaper blade performs remarkably better than expected.

Excellent lists. Was a fun watch. At $120ish, I would replace the Ronin RK with the Munetoshi Water Dragon. You get 1060 steel and a nice looking hamon. Mine even had pretty tight ito and the hamon even turned back to the mune at termination in the kissaki. I’m a big Ronin fan but Water Dragon all the way.

I enjoyed the video, and dont think there is much anyone can argue about. Some may swap one blade for another on the list, but overall I think this list shows why so many of the swords on your list are so common( ie the practical elite/XL, RDP's, musha/musashi's, etc.) Because they work for their purpose!! I own a practical elite, and recently got the munetoshi performance cutter. The munetoshi cuts mats almost like their not there if your angles are right. Makes double cuts on mats almost too easy. Like it makes you look better than you actually are (speaking about myself), which could prevent you from having to concentrate on your angles as much as you would with a different sword. But my Practical Elite is almost right there with the Munetoshi performance cutter. Anyway, I haven't handled everything on your list, but I agree with you on all those I have. 👍

You talked about coveting the Albion "Sovereign" for several years, and I believe I remember your saying that you finally got your hands on one. However, unless I've missed it, I don't believe you've done a video on it yet. Please do, it would be great! Also, it would be awesome if you did a video about another type of Japanese sword, the tsurugi. This is something that I think would give any KZitemr an original "edge"(pardon the pun 😁) over everyone else, because literally NO ONE has ever talked about this sword type! Specifically, it would be awesome if you could mention the most famous of all tsurugi, and the most important, legendary and iconic sword in the entire history of Japan, the famous Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, or "Grass-Cutting Sword" that is part of the creation myth of the Japanese Empire. I find it delicious that the most important sword in all of Japanese history and legend is, like the most iconic of European swords, a straight-bladed, double-edged sword! Finally, do any of these better manufacturers make tachi? It's unfortunate to me that the katana has stolen the spotlight from so many other types of Japanese sword!
@kidthorazine
4 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone actually makes a Tsurugi, so it would be kind of hard for him to talk about given the format of this channel. As for tachi, Shinwa makes some low end ones and a lot of the custom places like Swords of Northshire have them and can also make one for you.

As a newbie to sword steels, what are your thoughts on the following two steels and their heat treats? • Mono-tempered 9260 • Mono-tempered T-10 • Differentially tempered 9260 • Differentially tempered T-10 For someone that does back yard cutting and may or may not hit hard targets, what do you believe is the best steel to choose that offers good flexibility regarding twisting and bad cuts, while still having superior edge retention?
@Matthew_Jensen
4 жыл бұрын
The through hardened blades would be my recommendation for new folks. I don't find a large difference the type of steels from most production swords out of China. There are some differences but 5160, 9260, T10, 1060, 1095, 1075, and W2 all tend to act about the same. 1045 is a bit softer and L6 tends to be done wrong. Generally speaking I would recommend 1060, seems like the folks in China really know how to get the most out of it.

I don't have much advice based on that alone.. Most swords come pretty sharp. Skyjiro, Hanwei, and Citadel have been very sharp out of the box, generally speaking. Slightly (very) more so than others. That is very likely to do with the pieces I have had in my hand and they do not mean you will have the same results. If sharpness is your main objective, you will likely want to invest in the tools to make it happen yourself. I am just beginning that journey myself.

@Leon_Kozza
4 жыл бұрын
9260 is a much more complex steel in terms of alloys when compared to 1095 and generally needs to be quenched more slowly than 1095 for risk of cracking. If Sino swords quench in medium oil it should be fine but the 1095 may not harden as much. If you're getting it differentially hardened for a hamon then the 9260 should be covered with the clay being a kobuse lamination, which should be fine too. Usually for laminated blades you want steels that require a similar heat treatment, a good example would be 1095 paired with 1050. Hope that helps.
