Background
:
The fashion industry is a $2.4 trillion industry with numerous impacts ranging from economic to environmental concerns. It is believed to be the second most water consuming industry on the planet, consuming a total of 215 trillion liters of water annually. In addition to exploiting the use of water, the industry is a large pollutant with many of their activities releasing permanent chemicals into waterways. The industry is also wasteful of its own products, with an annual loss of $500 billion in product-value due to their mishandling and the lack of recycling of their excess garments and items.
Sustainable Fashion Programme:
The take-make-dispose model currently adopted by the fashion industry and its consumers has had detrimental and potentially long-lasting impacts on the environment. With fast-paced consumerism, globalization and mass market culture, production inevitably increases and results in pollution, excessive use and depletion of natural resources, biodiversity loss, and tremendous amounts of waste. The sustainable fashion programme by the United Nations Environmental Programme in West Asia aims to transform and encourage the region’s consumer base to become wary of their purchases’ environmental impacts, promote circularity and sustainable consumption and production, while encouraging cross-sectoral collaborations to find innovative solutions. An increased desire for responsible consumption and better understanding of products and the industry’s consequences can accelerate the shift towards a sustainable way of business and result in an industry reform.
