it's from a children song we sing with a toddler sitting on a knee, carefully rocking and then pretend to drop him while catching him last second. German children stories are always very dark. "Hoppe Hoppe Reiter, wenn er fällt dann schreit er....fällt er in den Graben, dann fressen ihn die Raben"

The whole song is a metaphor. The child lies not in the grave, but it has retreated into its room with the music box, because it was tormented and maybe abused by the parents/father. It waits in vain for help from the outside and so the child's soul dies a little more every day. Till wanted to let the child die, but the rest of the band members convinced him to save the little Jacob. That is why he added the verse with the Totensonntag (Sunday of the dead), when the child was saved.

I could be wrong, but in my opinion the meaning of the song is pretty straightfoward. The prologue of the song describes a child whose heart stopped beating (or so it was believed) because "his heart stood still for hours", so it was pronounced dead and buried. But the kid wasn't dead, and he awoke buried in a coffin with a little music box. He played with the music box until someone heard the "melody in the wind" at the graveyard (the music coming from the ground), and said person unburied and saved the child. The translation in the video doesn't help though. There's one part of the video that says "And from the Earth (capital E, meaning the planet Earth) the child sings", but the german word 'Erde' also means 'ground', so the correct translation (in my opinion) would be "and from the ground the child sings". There's also a pretty subtle distinction at the end of the song, where the lyrics say "und auf der Erde singt das Kind" (instead of "und aus der Erde singt das Kind" featured in all previous choruses), which means that by the end the child sings "on top" of the ground instead of "from beneath" the ground, as he was saved, but the translation in the video totally missed this. The video also says "They heard on Totensonntag this melody from God's field", but "Gottesacker" is a graveyard, so the correct translation is "they heard on Totensonntag this melody from the graveyard". Also at the beginning it says "A little person just pretends to die", but what it really says is "A little person appeared to die", or "died just in appearance", there's no pretending here. These little mistranslations add up to make the meaning of the song more confusing or metaphorical than it really is if you take the translation of the video at face value, as far as I can see. It could all be a metaphor, but I don't find any reason to believe that this child dies "metaphorically" due to some kind of abuse, in my opinion is literally a child being buried alive and saved at the end. I could be wrong though, this is poetry after all.

@@rodoxag9117 Rammstein lyrics are highly lyrical and by no means to be understood literally. Rammstein often addresses topics that always take place in secret and society is then always completely shocked when such a case comes to light again. This interpretation I found goes in a similar direction to mine. "This text traces the psychic death, the splitting off of a child who finds himself in the inescapable fate of sexual abuse. The physical symptoms are by no means to be taken at face value but reflect the externalization of the soul from the body, which must save itself from the violent death caused by the abuse. 'Nur der Regen weint am Grab' clearly symbolizes the indifference of the environment to this fate, although 'aus der Erde singt das Kind', it tries to communicate."

@@rodoxag9117 Yes... it's a traditional dark German nursery rhyme put to music. Not every nursery rhyme is a metaphor for something... some are just stories. Many illustrate a principle... others are just fucking stories. Little Miss Muffet wasn't scared off by a child molester, FFS. 🤣 And thanks for those translation fixes ... those make much more sense!

I love this song! I remember hanging out at a friend's house about 8 or so years ago and his older brother and dad really liked Rammstein. They had some songs playing in the house that day and I don't remember a single one of those - except for Spieluhr. When I properly listened to Spieluhr for the first time about a month ago, I immediately got this "wait, I remember this!"-feeling. That's how memorable this song is. Alex did an amazing job on this video! The imagery sets the mood and compliments the lyrics so well. Loved your reaction. I'm hyped for Haifisch coming soon!! ;)

@TomTomson81

I love this song. And although I know my way around poetry and that sort of thing and am always at the forefront when it comes to interpreting Rammstein songs, I have no idea what the song is about. 😁 So at least I don't see the higher real meaning. But it really has to exist, because they don't actually sing about zombies and unreal, unexplainable stuff. But what I can tell you is that the children's choir sings a well-known German children's song. Hoppe Hoppe Reiter is at least the corus of this children song. The rest of it is estranged from Rammstein. Apart from that, a little history lesson without a source and cloudy memory. But I know that I saw this many moons ago. 😁 Zombies really exist, or at least what comes closest to them. Years ago I saw a documentary that dealt with a belief of an indigenous tribe. They buried their choosen people alive. And only released again after many hours. A few survived, but suffered varying degrees of damage to the brain from the lack of oxygen. They could no longer speak, just drooled to themselves and staggered more than they walked. You could call it a zombie.

Hopefully at some point you will react to "Schlaf ein" by Lindemann, it is a beautiful song that was written for the play Hansel and Gretel, it is the end of the story and it seems like a lullaby although some interpret it a little darker seeing the dream as the representation of death, the point is that it is very beautiful and you notice the way of singing of Till who seems to be speaking to a child, a kind of story.
