This is a hike we completed last Feb 20, 2020 and I only got around to editing!
Rampart Ridge Loop Trail is normally an easy to moderate 4.8 mile loop hike with 1,417 feet elevation gain that can be done both in the summer time and in the winter time.
Doing this as a winter hike gives you the added beauty of snow-topped trees and majestic views of Cougar Rock, Mt. Rainier and the surrounding scenery. Since it is mostly at tree-line level, the avalanche risk is fairly low on this trail as well.
Located by the Longmire ranger station and hotel, this trail is easily accessible to most hikers as the road leading to this remains open 24/7. This is a good alternative when the road to Paradise is closed due to weather and snow.
Details:
- Mt. Rainier national park pass or America the Beautiful Pass is needed to enter the national park
- Microspikes and/or snowshoes may be required for this trail. When we did this hike, there was a fairly solid booth path to follow the whole way. We brought both spikes and snowshoes but opted not to use either.
