Such a beautiful song, with heartfelt lyrics and such a simple melody behind it. The feelings are equally there. I studied Matrimonial Law; and so many relations live and die in the way this song describes, where infatuation becomes rejection. One party takes control and the other realises they have been used, and leaves. In this case the downtown, downbeat guy; and the uptown up-tempo woman not even realising that she had been leading the man on and treating him with contempt. Of course, as I found when reading law, and also through personal and professional experiences, the scenario works both ways. Rejection is never easy when in a relationship, particularly when it takes a time for it to dawn on the "used" party that actually they have been taken for granted and used. Having seen so many situations like this, it probably accounts for the reason why I stayed single. Once your heart has been broken in such a cruel way, it is difficult, if not impossible to repair. It took me ages to find a copy of this on vinyl although I heard it frequently on overseas radio-stations in the 1970s (Radio Luxembourg, Hilversum Radio). I still play it from time to time to remember the girl I truly loved, but never told; and for Patsy to realise that actually I really did love her. She was equally shocked when I did tell her and indeed wrote to me and asked "why?" Perhaps I was the down town, down beat guy, who couldn't hold a job down for health reasons and she was the Uptown, albeit shy woman; who turned out to be not as shy as I had thought. Heartbreaks are always difficult, and this song underlines it in such a simple way.

The two songs' Taxi "and' Uptown Uptempo Woman" just seem alot alike to me The 60's had great music too even the 80's however the 70's i guess it was just my time " "But Come Monday it will be all right come Monday I'll be holding you tight i spent 4 lonely days in brown LA. HAZE AND I JUST WANT YOU BACK BY MY SIDE" JIMMY BUFFETT from the summer of 1970 i think
