The sad irony of this is that Randy Smith was highly underated player. Rest in peace Mr. Smith

He was incredibly fast and durable. I remember his tremendous performance in the 1978 All-Star Game, with 30-foot buzzer beaters in both the 1st and 2nd quarters. It's great that you found all this video!

You have to remember that Randy Smith was a legitimate three sport All American in college and basketball was his number three sport. He was an incredible soccer player - his best sport - and an almost seven foot high jumper. Incredible athlete, I bet he would have been even better in football as a wide received.

Seen Randy many of games at he Aud, was a gazelle on the fastbreak too. Coach Ramsey loved Randy's smarts and game control. Really enjoyed hearing Don Criqui doing the play-by-play. Historically a very underrated player and also was a very great soccer player.

@@choward5430 he definitely was faster end to end. Imma need you to check some old rose highlights. As far as pure natural speed, John wall is the fastest guy ever end to end. Young John wall was a bullet in human form. No pun intended. But with the ball in his hands, I don’t know if there was anybody more explosive off the bounce as peak Derrick rose. His top end acceleration was ridiculous. Randy definitely is on that short list of the fastest guys too tho.

Random stat, but Randy Smith had 8 different games with exactly 8 steals in his career (which is his career high), including rare back-to-back games with 8 steals. Only John Stockton (9), Alvin Robertson (10), and Michael Jordan (11) have more games with 8+ steals, since they became an official stat in 1973-74. Micheal Ray Richardson also had 8 games with 8+ steals With the Braves/Clippers: 1. Jan. 22nd, 1974 vs. PHI - 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 8 steals 2. Dec. 26th, 1975 vs. PHI - 32 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 8 steals 3. Mar. 22nd, 1977 vs. ATL - 26 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 8 steals 4. Mar. 24th, 1977 vs. PHX - 29 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists, 8 steals 5. Dec. 13th, 1977 vs. POR - 20 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists, 8 steals 6. Feb. 7th, 1979 vs. SAS - 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 8 steals With the Cavaliers: 7. Nov. 28th, 1979 vs. HOU - 16 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 8 steals 8. Oct. 14th, 1980 vs. DET - 18 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 8 steals He also had three games with exactly 7 steals and five games with exactly 6 steals

From the few times I saw him play, on TV, he was impressive. He didn't get alot of notoriety, this was before ESPN, but he was a handful. When he won the MVP in the All-Star game, Coach Jack Ramsey of the losing West team, said, "What was saw Randy do today I saw him do many times". Ramsey coached Randy in Buffalo. That's high praise.
