Had same issue with that radio. Cb shop said it was trashed board, took it home and found cold solder joints along side, removed old solder, cleaned and resoldered all along side and found 4 others. Cobra 29 ltd did same.

Thanks for the video. I am having the static problem and I will be looking into that transistor. I pulled my rci2950 out of my truck tonight because my display lights went out. Later I hooked it up to the bench and the display lights are back on. Cold solder joints I must find. I really like this radio but I think its much better as a base.

If the capacitors were bad I would be thinking about doing a complete re-capping if keeping the radio. I assume the ones near to the hot transistor bodies died first. Good repair well done.

Thought that was your problem. Had to replace mine and might have to replace my finals now the power is down again. So it is either them or the FR finals this time.

The circuit board is really thin and the soldering is questionable on these radios. Mobile vehicle vibrations are really bad circumstance for such a radio.

Sorry Andy I should have watched both videos before I comented on the last one LOL but looks like I was right anyway LOL. Thats one of the things that Mark passed on to me was to just bite the bullet and and remove components and clean everything rather than just adding more solder and hoping for the best. Well done mate u got it sorted nice job.

+Gary g1fsh I agree, this should be something done by somebody with a bit more skill. I am concerned about doing more damaga than good in the end. I only do what is necessary but perhaps one day I will expand more into maintenance and cleaning as you suggested.

+Andy Tobin its only practice Andy i know what u mean its scary at first but the more practice u get the better u will get at desoldering cleaning and resoldering. solder braid for desoldering is the key its much cinder to solder pads than a desoldering pump easier to use as well.
@Tobinindustrial

The desolder pump I have come to use pretty well. The solder braid (Mark's trick) needed cleaning and so if I ever get some good braid I will know how to maintain it so it soaks up the solder. I am definately needing a good temp control soldering iron and some smaller solder that is probably much better than the old crap I am using now. I am just getting by but it is probable that I may have caused that trace to lift with excessive heat. I never noticed it before so you never know.

Hi Andy, I do have a Ranger 2950 not powering up. Not the fuse, what should I look into ? thanks,

There is a diode near where the power wire comes in that may be blown. That diode will usually pop first if the power wires get crossed over by accident. You may also have a small transistor knoocked out

So it sounds like instead of just passing thermal energy it was creating continuity between the IC and the chassis when you flexed the casing? Nice to hear all is well :)

Variable...? Hmmmm.... Light dimmer switch...
@SpectreOZ

+Andy Tobin No it's a variable temperature soldering station, I'm not sure how well a light dimmer switch would work with a mains soldering iron but it would make for one helluva' experiment :)

I'm surprised the contact of the IC's against the chassis wouldn't cause burn out / detonation.
@Tobinindustrial

+StalwartFixer I think you are right. I need to get back at that radio and dig deeper. I think what I did just masked the issue for a bit. It may be something else but it is getting beyond my scope of knowledge.

I think it's time for test gear
@Tobinindustrial
9 жыл бұрын
I've been looking for test gear for over two years now but there is nothing locally that is of any use as it is old and like boat anchors. Some test gear is in need of repair also. I looked into new gear but decent equipment is pretty expensive. As budgets go, I am weary to spend a considerable amount of money on gear knowing that my skills are lacking. The saddest reality is thatthere are no good technicians anywhere near me. My best option is to ship items to central Canada or into the USA. In the meantime, I do have enough working radio gear to satisfy my hunger in this hobby. Hopefully what is working will remain working. the rest is left to a half baked troubleshoot and attempt at repair. Thanks for the comments and the encouragement Simon. I ain't quittingin repairs but just picking the battles I have half a chance of winning with my ever expanding but limited skills..

The number one issue I have always witnessed in these 2950's is bad solder joints. I fixed three of these radios just by reflowing a whole bunch of bad solder joints.

I bought a brand new rci 2950 dx 6 it's of frequency way off. I tuned it back to on frequency. I was try to town the power down in side so less Rf now finals blown I'd say I hope to replace the finals in the weeks coming weeks
